The world of martial arts is on a constant evolution. Some self defense moves which were considered very useful many years ago no longer holds true in today’s modern world. I am not saying that this is a bad thing, necessarily. This just means that a lot of new catalysts have come in to the situation, so it is necessary to also evolve regarding new practices and studies. For example, take the art of gracie ju-jitsu. Now, it seems like all of the martial artists stand up and had to find ways to do their fighting on their backs, And then the game continued to change later on. It now required a mixture of martial arts just to be able to compete in the professional circles. This was required. The martial arts practitioners had to keep a game of good stand up and those with a great ground game had to compete with the best among the best. A lot of individuals are only interested about martial arts because they want to learn self defense moves. For them, they are thinking about reality and that they need self defense moves for the streets and other issues that may come their way. What about you, do you know what to do in the event of an altercation?
I would just like to emphasize that there’s two basic types of self defense moves: the street forms and also the sport forms about fighting. Both forms share many of the same practices, techniques and principles but they are really very different in essence. This is because when you fight during a competition, you are required to devote a lot of your time into sparring, training and conditioning. But in training for your self defense moves, on the other hand, this won’t take up so a lot of your time. Really, the only key here is that you learn a lot of self defense moves. You have to know the moves that work and those which do not. In my experience, there are a lot of martial arts techniques and self defense moves which are efficient and practical, but the others are of no use at all. I will share with you my perspective about self defense moves because I have tried and trained with many various kinds of martial arts over they years.
Firstly, if you are going to learn a kind of martial arts for learning self defense moves, I do not recommend that you choose one that has a lot of hard styles and fancy kicks like tae kwon do and karate, You can save the unrealistic blocks and fancy kicks for those points competition. If yoou want a style that is good, hard and proved its worth, then I suggest that you go with Muay Thai. Next, the two very practical martial arts for me regarding self defense moves for depending yourself on the streets are Brazilian ju-jitsu and Wing Chun. Look it up on the internet!
