Karate is an art of self-defense, involving kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open hand techniques. Some examples of an open hand technique are the famous “karate chop” (remember the guys breaking bricks with their hands? That’s the one!) locks, throws and vital point strikes. The art of Karate means “open hand” or “empty hand” and originated from Ryukyu Islands – Japan.
The martial arts movies between 1960-70s increased the popularity of the sport greatly. Karate schools began building all over the world to those interested in the art. Well, who wouldn’t be interested in learning a kick-ass martial art and fight like Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee?
However karate is not always practiced for self-defense, but also for cultural reasons and self-perfection. Karate-do teaches ethical principles and can have spiritual significance to its adherents. Today there are 23 million, karate practitioners worldwide!
Including…Jim Carrey…

Nice post!
I want to learn Karate. I know you have to be really fit, but it’s worth the trouble if you can defend yourself if you find yourself in trouble.
