Most people are familiar with classical martial arts such like karate or judo. People can associate them with self defense and fancy looking movements. They are good way to keep up your fitness and in a serious situation they will be handy. They will help to defend yourself but there is a more effective way to learn techniques to beat the bads guy who you might confront: Krav Maga!

Krav Maga, nowadays practised all over the world, developped in the Europe in the 1930s to 1940s among the Jews who were persecuted by the nazis. The founder of Krav maga was Imi Lichtenfeld (1910-1998), who also later trained Israeli soldiers in Krav Maga.

Krav Maga means “Contact Combat” and indeed that it is. The idea of KM is to be able to defend youself against multiple opponents and to get out of the situation without getting hurt. Techniques are easy to learn and very effective. In KM any means to survive from a stress situation will be used.

I’ve practived KM for 18 months now and in my opinoin the training has proved to be extremely intresting, useful and fun. Besides learning skills to defend yourself, you burn calories and gain flexibility. A graet way to get in shape. Training is normally really intensive so you are going to sweat a bit, but that is just good for you. In KM there are no competitions because Krav Maga is not a sport in traditional meaning but a self defence system.

Luckuly I haven’t ever used those techniques I’ve learned in KM, but I have no doubt about the fact that everything I’ve learned is useful. I strongly recommend you to start KM because it just might save your day in the future.
