How will it affect his career?

When Brett “The Grim” Rogers was set up to face off against a man revered as the pound for pound greatest mixed martial artist to live, Fedor Emelianenko, no one gave him a chance. Despite having a perfect record of ten wins with no losses plus the fact that not one of Rogers’ fights had made it to the third round meant little when he was set up to take on “The Last Emperor”. Rogers first came to prominence when he was signed up to Mixed Martial Arts promotion, EliteXC after compiling a record of 5-0 in smaller events in his home state of Minnesota. He would go on to use his hammer like fists to defeat the likes of British brawler James Thompson and the then undefeated Ron Humphrey. But none of these wins would compare to Brett’s win over former UFC champion and world class striker, Andrei Arlovski. Knocking his opponent out in a matter of seconds, Brett was shot into the limelight and when Strikeforce signed Fedor Emelianenko, Rogers was one of the few Heavyweights on the roster so it was only natural that he would face off on their new signing.
Facing up against Fedor, Brett seemed jittery. As if he was anxious to get in there and face off against the greatest fighter of our time. Rogers would go on to shock the world as he would not instantly be knocked out and would hold his own against the veteran fighter. In fact with his very first punch Rogers would cut and break the nose of Fedor, causing him to preciously bleed to the point that it seemingly affected him. It was surprising that Rogers, who seemed to be no more than a bumbling striker before this fight, was actually fighting and arguably winning against the best fighter of our generation. There was even a point where Brett was able to hold Fedor against the cage and land knee’s at will, this might not seem like a big deal but Fedor has rarely ever been man handled like he was with Rogers. Rogers seemed to be doing well going into the second round until one of the famed “Murderball” punches thrown my Fedor landed square on the chin of Brett, knocking him out instantly. Brett was knocked out and suffered the first loss of his career but this loss has arguably been more beneficial to his career than any of his former wins. Rogers not only looked good in the cage, he showed off his power on the face of Fedor as he left the cage bloody and bruised. Looking at Brett’s record, he had no place being in the same cage as Fedor let alone fighting. The majority of his opponents have been low level fighters and he has yet to be tested by a world class fighter. Yet he went into the cage against Fedor and actually proved that he was much more than the definition of a can crusher, a fighter who can only defeat low level fighters.

While Fedor remained victorious and Brett lost, it was a win win for both fighters. Fedor was able to prove that he is one of the best in the world and Brett proved that he can hang in there with the best in the world, never has a knockout loss in MMA been so impressive and beneficial for the losing fighter.
