Airsoft is a simulated military sport that mimicks wartime activities. The weapons used in airsoft are usually fairly close in look and usually a 1:1 scale of real weapons. The other difference is that airsoft guns shoot 6mm bb’s instead of real ammunition (obviously).

When starting out in airsoft you must remember that you will be shooting at people from varied distances. This is the first step in deciding what type of gun to use. There are many players out there who buy guns that are too powerful, and then decide to play cqb games (close quarters battle). Usually when playing these type of games, the engagement limit is 350 fps (feet per second) or under. These games sometimes will also only let you use a sidearm or a shotgun. Many other cqb games also let you use your AEG (auto electric gun), but only in semi-auto or “single-shot” mode. So, you wouldn’t want to buy a gun that’s 400 fps when you plan to play mostly cqb, or if you want to be on the front lines with your team.
Higher quality guns are designed for either higher rates of fire, or higher torque (distance your bb will go). These two things are what make all AEG’s what they are. A few good examples of higher end guns are Classic Army, G&G, G&P, Tokyo Marui, and Systema. Most of those guns are within the $200-$500 range, with the exception of systema. Systema are actual PTW or personal training weapons. They are built to the highest specifications of airsoft, and fire with super high speed and torque, making them some of the best on the market. This is why these weapons are also costing upwards of $1200-$1500.

You don’t have to spend alot of money on an airsoft gun nowadays to get the most out of your playing experience. All you have to do is buy a decent gun that is at least 300 fps, and work on your training. The weapon is only half the battle in airsoft, the other half is tactics, movement, and being able to handle your weapon.
Echo1, Dboys, ICS and other companies make mid-grade guns that fire upwards of 400 fps in some cases, but only cost a third of what the higher end guns cost. This is mostly because they are built out of ABS plastic instead of metal (with the exception of Tokyo Marui) and their internals are lower quality than that of the higher end guns. This can be remedied by buying internal upgrades to make your gun shoot as good as the high end types. The guns listed above are very often metal bodied guns with good internals, and usually the most modified guns used today because of the upgradeability. These guns can be modded to shoot as good or better than the stock Classic Army or TM guns in most cases.
The different types of guns varies on manufacturer, but you can a copy of almost any actual gun out there today. With a list that includes AK-74 and 47’s, M-4 Carbines, M-16’s, Scar, SAW, Thompson, Uzi, and thousands of more choices, it can be hard to pick the weapon you want. Everyones taste in weaponry differ, so pick what you like, and what you think will do the job.
There are many good sites to buy airsoft guns. A few of these favorite online sites for thousands of airsoft players are: Evike.com, Shortyusa.com, kapowwe.com, airsoftgi.com and many others.
Finally, The airsoft gun is all about what you like and what you think you need to have in order to get the most out of your airsoft experience. Safety and fun are the most important things when playing airsoft, and with the right choices in weapons, you can have both.
