Hunting: Instinct or Insanity?

A humorous look at hunting.

I enjoy nature. I enjoy shooting animals. With a camera! I will wait patiently in a blind or camoflaged position. Yeah, for maybe an hour then I’m done. No critters, no problem. I’ll go back to the warm truck and have breakfast. But not some people.

I have friends and relatives who will go to any length to kill something. No amount of time or money is going to stop them. My nephew recently had a house built. He and his wife are barely getting by trying to pay for it, yet he is on a three day turkey hunting trip as I am writing this. It’s likely he will “bag” (kill) a turkey but, is it worth it? The time and certainly the money it’s costing him could be better spent. At least he’s going to eat the turkey if he gets one. Some people pay outrageous amounts of money to kill something they’re not even going to eat. It should be a law; If you kill it, you eat it. (Please don’t include that skunk I ran over on the way to work).

It took a friend of mine five deer hunting trips before he finally “got” (killed) his first one. He would get so excited when he got one in his sites he would scare it off. Is this really natural behavior, or is there a darker side to it? I haven’t read any psychological reports on the subject, but I’ll bet there are some. Perhaps it’s a way to kill without remorse or fear of punishment. There’s likely some hunting instints left over from the past. Maybe, deep down we are all hunters.

I personally hate to kill anything. I’ve even all but stopped fishing because, even with catch and release, a lot of them die and I don’t like cleaning them anyway. And no, I’m not a Vegan or something like that. I’m actually a very carnivorous person. I just don’t want to be there when the killing and skinning is going on.

Call me crazy, (or lazy), but I would rather hunt down a thick steak at the grocery store than shoot and clean a wild animal. It’s a whole lot easier, cheaper, comfortable. and convenient. And I’ll probably see some two legged “dear” at the store! You don’t see many of those in the woods.
