In the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins watched the cup being hoisted by the Detroit Red Wings in their own home.
Now, it’s the other way around. The ‘08-’09 Stanley Cup Champions are the Pittsburgh Penguins! The Penguins, who made a late season run, rallied up into 4th place in the Eastern Conference. In the playoffs, they beat the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitols, and Carolina Hurricanes (in that order) to advance to yet another Stanley Cup finals, and yet again, they faced the Detroit Red Wings.
It was a long road, but the Pittsburgh Penguins made it all the way. They went down early in the series, 2-0, but rallied back to tie it up. Then, they did something spectacular: They won Game 7 AT Detroit to win the Stanley Cup. This is huge, because the previous 6 game 7’s in the Stanley Cup Finals had been won by the home team. As well, the Detroit Red Wings had been nearly unstoppable on home ice. However, the Penguins did it. They managed to make a late season comeback, and then upset the Red Wings on their home ice.
Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on defeating the defending champions! The “new” champions are now ready to bask in the glory of their victory, and Sidney Crosby is now the youngest captain to carry the Stanley Cup!
