The Washington Capitals entered the National Hockey League for the 1974-75 season, along with the Kansas City Scouts. The team has enjoyed regular season and individual success during their history but have yet to hoist the Stanley Cup.

A. Yvon Labre was an original Washington Capital. He played with the team until retiring at the start of the 1980-81 season. Labre scored the first ever Capitals goal at home, putting one past Rogie Vachon of the Los Angeles Kings. Yvon’s number 7 was the first to be retired by the club.
Q. Number 5 has been retired by the Capitals in honour of what player?
A. Rod Langway starred with the Capitals in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Langway is to date the only Washington player to be awarded the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman. Rod won the award in consecutive seasons, 1982-83 and 1983-84.

A. Mike Gartner played pretty much the whole 1980’s decade with the Capitals. Gartner is second on the Capitals all-time list for goals scored and total points. Mike was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

A. Dale Hunter is the only player in NHL history to amass 3000 penalty minutes and 1000 points. Hunter served as captain of the Capitals for several years in the 1990’s and is second only to Dave ‘Tiger’ Williams for the most penalty minutes all-time in the NHL.
