Basic Approach To A Better Swing

As a person that enjoys learning things on my own, I found myself learning how to play golf. This article briefly explains how to get rid of a slice using a simple approach.

I always thought golf was a boring game design for people that had nothing better to do. Boy was I wrong. My wife decided to buy me a golf club set for Christmas last year, and since then I have been obsessed. I have never been one to take classes or being taught anything, since it takes the fun away from figuring it out on my own. Therefore, I decided to do some experimenting, read a little, and find ways to improve my game.

As many new payers do, I had a slice that won’t quit, that is until last week. I decided to buy a pack of practice balls, and simply start hitting them in my backyard until I figured out what I was doing wrong. I simply tried to align myself as the guys on TV, take slow, well though out swings and presto, no matter what I did, there was a slice.

Then I started changing things one by one. First I changed my stance to match the swing, therefore aiming further left so the ball will curve and land where I needed it. That didn’t work when I realized the balls were slowly curving more and more since unconsciously I knew I needed it to land in one place while aiming at another.

Then I tried changing different aspects of my swing. Taking slow shots, I noticed that I was swinging the club as if I was a Samurai (if you can picture that). I notice the club would come from the outside-in and by the time I hit the ball I was giving it a spin, therefore the ball would curve in mid air. Once I noticed this, I forced myself to get out of the comfort zone where I normally held the club, and pushed it away from me. I consciously made an effort to keep it away, and that time, the flight path was much straighter. I worked on that approach, and slowly found myself hooking the ball!

After a little adjusting, I can comfortably say that by simply feeling and paying attention at my body, I figured out what I was doing wrong. That, you can’t learn from a book, or from someone else’s teachings. I, by no means, dismiss the usefulness of an instructor or a coach. I simply enjoy learning things on my own, and get more out of life that way.
