Who is The NFL’s MVP?

Who will be top dog this year?

It’s that time of year again; time to start arguing about who will be the NFL’s most valuable player.  Normally by this point we’re down to a couple of candidates, but this year we appear to have a three way race.  And appropriately enough, the candidates are from the league’s three top teams.  Let’s take a look at the frontrunners…

Drew Brees, QB (New Orleans Saints)

The statistics are gaudy.  236 for 343, 3,117 yards.  27 touchdowns, 9 interceptions.  (two more rushing).  He has led the Saints to an 11-0 record, running the offense with surgical precision.  There is a fairly good chance, with New England in the dust behind them, that the Saints will go 16-0, and that helps his cause.  Barring a collapse, the award should be his to lose.

Reasons he’ll win:  An undefeated season looks good.  Big numbers look better.

Reasons he might not: He would have to fall apart; even one bad game might not cost him;  he’d have to either get hurt or have a significant collapse.

Peyton Manning, QB (Indianapolis Colts)

The numbers are similar to Brees’s.  298 for 423, 3415 yards.  24 touchdowns, 11 interceptions.  While Brees has a world of talent surrounding him, Manning has carried the Colts, Willing them to an identical 11-0 record.  He has had to adjust to a new coach, and outside of Reggie Wayne, he’s playing with a stable of relatively unknown recievers.  Even if Brees falters, the award could very well skip over Manning and go to….

Why he’ll win:  He’s done more with less around him by far than the other two.

Why he might not:  His biggest problem may be that we pretty much expect this of him.  His personal bar is so high that we would be disappointed if he didn’t put up 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns.

Brett Favre, QB (Minnesota Vikings)

Statistically, he may be having the best year of the three.  248 for 358, 2,874 yards.  24 touchdowns, just 3 interceptions.  When you factor in that he basically spent the first two weeks of the season handing off to A.P., it’s even more impressive.  He is, at 40, looking like the perfect quarterback.  He has transformed what would have been a possible playoff team into a solid Super Bowl contender.

Why he’ll win:  Sentiment.  To do what he’s doing, at 40…. who wouldn’t like to see the gunslinger ride off into the sunset like that?

Why he might not:  Some guy named Brees.

The Verdict:

Obviously, it depends on how they all finish.  But assuming they all finish strong, Brees (who in all liklihood made himself the front runner by decimating the Pats on MNF)  should walk away with the hardware.  Farve might steal it away oon that sentiment note, but Manning will probably be left out in the cold.

The big question people seem to ask here is “Who is more important to their team?”  That doesn’t help here, as the answer is similar with all three.  In the end, the big numbers and mystique the Saints are building should carry Brees.

We have the same sort of outcome in the English Premier soccer league at present with three maybe four teams who look to dominate. My team Chelsea look to be invincible at present but have fallen to weaker sides. Although I was sorry that CFC lost, I felt it was good for the game and it is surprises like this that makes the football league one of if not the best in the World. There are still chances that four to eight teams could win it as it isn’t half way through and the remaining can still cause upsets and change the final outcome right up to the last games of the season.

    Good Artcle Mihir

As much as everyone would love to crown Brees for his good year, look at what he has compared to Manning. If the question is, who means more to their team, Peyton’s the obvious answer. No quarterback means as much to his team as Peyton does, and this can be applied to an “all-time” level. When Peyton plays well, so does the rest of the team, including defense. With guys leaving Indy left and right for bigger contracts, at what point do you say “He sucks without (insert name here)”? Never. Brees needs Meachem and Colston. Favre DEFINITELY needs his top rookie reciever and best RB in the league…
