Could things possibly get any worse for Notre Dame, no starting the 07 season 0-4 and starring 0-8 right in the face? With the first four games of the 07 campaign complete the Irish look to be possibly to the worst teams in division 1A. The one loan bright spot for the Irish had been freshman Jimmy Clausen, now most people are wondering how you can say that, Notre Dame is 0-4 and had not scored an offensive touchdown until last week.
Well if you look at Clausen for the long run and not just look at this season Clausen has shown pocket presence and the ability to make good decisions under pressure. Give him more than 4 games to prove that to you and Clausen will be the bright spot in the Notre Dame’s future.
So far this season Clausen has yet to throw a touchdown pass but has played in all four of Notre Dames games and started three of them. He is currently 39-68 305 yards and 2 interceptions. His completion percentage is a respectable 89.5 pretty good considering he spends more time on his back then he dose in the pocket. Obviously right now the Irish do not have the talent to contend this year or probably for that case next year, but the Irish need to take the rebuilding in stride and use every positive they see as a stepping stone for the season to come.
Well as the old adage goes you are not as bad as you look, well in the Notre Dames case I beg to differ. For even the most die hard of Notre Dame fans they still believe they have a chance to win maybe three or four games this season, well its not out of the question if Clausen could get some time and the offensive line gave some running lane to whomever is caring the ball, and the defense could stop someone for once maybe they have a shot.
Most so called experts say the Irish will start 0-8 I think they will be able to sneak out three first win of the season Purdue, but then face the daunting task of UCLA, Boston Collage and then my personal favorite number 1 USC. Then to conclude the season they play Navy, Air force, Duke, Stanford so maybe they be able to sneak out a few wins there.
So if you are an Irish Fan look for the silver lining here and just look for all the positives you see this year, god only know you can probably count them all on one hand. Just give Clausen a year or so to get acquainted with the offense and expect much better things in 08.
