What Happened to College Football?

Are you serious?

You laugh.  I almost do, too.  But then you look at the polls, and there the Broncos sit at #5.  Virginia Tech kindly stepped out of the race this afternoon.  Top ranked Florida eked by what is only a decent Arkansas team.  #2 Alabama struggled against South Carolina.  Texas barely beat Oklahoma without their starting Quarterback.

As much as it may defy football common sense, the Broncos may have the easiest road to the title game.  SEC teams will be picking each off every week.  The Big 12 sucks.  The Big 10 is as week as it has been in years;  the best team in the conference lost to Purdue.

Here’s a scenario… all of these teams stumble; not unrealistic.  USC falls somewhere along the way… also not a stretch.  Boise and (you may want to sit down here) Cincinatti win out.  And there you have it;  the Boise State Broncos and the Cincinnatti Bengals, er… Bearcats are playing for the crystal football in January.  What the hell has happened to college football?

It could be that, like in the NFL, the gap is just shrinking.  Remember the old days, when your Nebraskas, Notre Dames and Miamis would pound teams by 60 points?  Actual conferenceopponents.  Now?  Aside from our two ‘contenders’, the top 25 is loaded with teams like TCU (do you even know what TCU stands for?) Houston, and South Florida. (Is this even a real team, or a playstation creation?)

Or, more likely, this is just an odd year.  We get those every so often… remember 2 loss LSU (at least we knew what the hell that stood for) beating 2 loss Ohio St?  This looks like it’ll make that year look mundane.  And it’s marvelous… Can you imagine a more interesting scenario?  Nice to have absolutely no clue where we’ll be in January.  That’s College Football.
