Here are a bunch of interesting facts and stats from all 43 Super Bowls.

Most Wins

  • With their win in Super Bowl XLIII, The Pittsburgh Steelers stand alone as the only franchise to win six Super Bowls
  • The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers each have five victories
  • The Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Raiders, New England Patriots & Washington Redskins all have three

Most Appearances

  • The Dallas Cowboys have appeared in the most Super Bowls, making eight appearances
  • With their trip to Super Bowl XLIII, the Pittsburgh Steelers have now made it to seven
  • The New England Patriots and Denver Broncos have appeared in six

Undefeated (Multiple Appearances)

  • Only one team remains undefeated with multiple Super Bowl appearances, the San Francisco 49ers, who sit at 5 – 0

Back-to-Back Jack

  • Eight different teams have won back-to-back Super Bowls: Green Bay, Miami, Pittsburgh twice, San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, New England
  • Two teams have appeared in three straight Super Bowls: The Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills
  • Miami lost the first one and then won the next two
  • Buffalo not only lost all three, they lost a fourth, becoming the only team to ever appear in four straight Super Bows and lose all four

One and Done Winners

  • Up until Super Bowl XXXV, the New York Jets were the only team to make it to the Super Bowl just once and win it. Since then, two other teams have accomplished that feat: The Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Can’t buy a Win

  • The Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills own the dishonorable distinction of appearing in the most Super Bowls without a win, four
  • The Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals are the only teams to appear in two Super Bowls and lose them both

One and Done Losers

  • Six teams have made only one appearance in the Super Bowl and lost: San Diego Chargers (XXIX), Atlanta Falcons (XXXIII), Tennessee Titans (XXXIV), Carolina Panthers (XXXVIII), Seattle Seahawks (XL), Arizona Cardinals (XLIII)

Best Winning Percentage (at least 3 appearances)

  • As mentioned, The San Francisco 49ers are the only team that has appeared multiple Super Bowls and have never lost. They are a 5 – 0.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers are now 6 – 1
  • The New York Giants are 3 – 1

Worst overall record (at least 3 appearances)

  • The Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, both 0 – 4, are not the only teams with losing records, who have appeared in 3 or more Super Bowls
  • The Denver Broncos sit at 2 – 4
  • The Miami Dolphins are 2 – 3
  • The only other team with a below .500 record to appear in at least three Super Bowls is the St. Louis Rams, who are 1 – 2, with one of those losses coming when they were the Los Angeles Rams.
  • Unbelievably, every other team to appear in at least three Super Bowls has at least a .500 record.

The Points

  • The most points scored by a winning team are 55 by the San Francisco 49ers in SB XXIV vs. Denver.
  • The least amount of points by a winning team is 16. Three teams accomplished this: The Jets in SB III, The Baltimore Colts in V and the Pittsburgh Steelers in XIX.
  • The least amount of points scored by a losing team is 6, by the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IX
  • The most points in a losing effort are 29 by the Carolina Panthers in SB XXXVIII vs. New England.
  • The Dallas Cowboys have scored more points than any other team in Super Bowl history, 204. However it has taken them eight games to do it.
  • In five Super Bowl appearances, all wins, the San Francisco 49ers have scored 188 points, averaging 37.6 per game.

Margin of Victory

  • The winning teams have averaged 30 points and the losing teams 15, making the average margin of victory 15
  • The largest margin of victory was 45 points in Super Bowl XXIV, with San Francisco beating Denver 55 to 10
  • The smallest margin of victory was one point in Super Bowl XXV, when the Giants defeated the Bills 20 to 19. That is the only time the Super Bowl was decided by one point.
  • In five victories the San Francisco 49ers outscored their opponents 188 to 86, an average score of 36 to 17

We’ll Be Back

  • If a team appears in one Super Bowl, there is a good chance they will come back for a second and third time
  • Of the 27 teams to make it, 18 have appeared at least twice (67%) and 14 have appeared at least three times (52%)

Can’t Say That They Have:

  • Only 5 franchises have never been to a Super Bowl: Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints
  • The Cleveland Browns can at least claim some kind of a consolation prize. The original Cleveland Brown franchise moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens. However, with that move the NFL claimed they lost all previous records and history attached to the Cleveland Browns. Therefore, they were considered a new franchise. When the Browns re-established their team in Cleveland they assumed all of the history and records that the old Browns left behind.

Second time around

  • Seven teams won their first Super Bowl in their second appearance after losing their first: Chiefs, Colts, Cowboys, Dolphins, Raiders, Redskins and Rams
  • Only two teams have accomplished this in successive years, and they did it back to back. First the Dallas Cowboys lost Super Bowl V and came back to win Super Bowl VI. Then the Miami Dolphins, who lost to the Cowboys in Super Bowl VI, beat Washington in Super Bowl VII. This feat has never been accomplished since then.

Repeats and Revenge

  • There have been three rematches in the Super Bowl history: Washington vs. Miami, Dallas vs. Pittsburgh, Dallas vs. Buffalo.
  • The Bills are the only team unable to capture a victory in a rematch
  • Pittsburgh vs. Dallas is the only three-peat match-up, with Dallas finally winning the third match-up sixteen years later.

Head Coaches

  • There are five undefeated Super Bowl Head Coaches that have appeared in more than one Super Bowl:
  • Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers, Jimmy Johnson of the Dallas Cowboys, and Tom Flores of the Raiders are all 2-0
  • Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Bill Walsh of the San Francisco 49ers stand in a class by themselves at 4-0

Underdogs

  • Underdogs have covered the spread eighteen times
  • Underdogs have won outright thirteen times

Super Bowl MVP’s

  • Quarterbacks have won the MVP twenty-two times
  • Running Backs have won the award seven times
  • Wide Receivers have won six MVP awards
  • Joe Montana is the only three-time MVP
  • Three other players have won it twice: Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw and Tom Brady
  • Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw are the only players in history to win the MVP two years in a row

Very few of the Super Bowl games have ever lived up to the hype. This year game was one of the best in recent history. A great game that was fun to watch. I’ll have to admit that i was pulling for the underdog Cardinals, but it still was a great game. Good article Peter with plenty of research and statistics. And oh yea, the Boss at halftime to boot. Well done friend.

    Hi!
My son’s and grandson’s really like your articles.
They argue back and forth about the games all the time. Shouts in front of the T.V. are the most fun.
Stories of when they played, and who won the most plays flying back and forth. Keep writing, we love it.

  27. Posted February 13, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Another great well researched piece Pete,It probably was almost as much fun to write it as it was to read it.I never really liked those Niners teams, jealous I guess, but I loved those Buffalo teams with Jim Kelley. The Staubach/Bradshaw Superbowls were my favorites, but I loved the last two.
Before I started the writing gig,I spent half of my time at NFL.com.I finally got through the whole thing without the computer flipping out!
