The Oceanside High Pirates defeated Helix 26-10 last Friday afternoon to win their sixth straight CIF San Diego Section title and improve their dominant season 13-0.

     Now what?

There’s definitely satisfaction in winning a section title, and there’s even more satisfaction when you’ve done so in the most dominant fashion. Through their 13 wins, the Pirates have yet to trail their opponents. But beneath the shallow celebration lies a void. The end to a perfect season, for the Pirates, would be a state championship.

As California anxiously awaits the winner of the final section championship game between powerhouses Servite and Edison, the Pirates pray for a slot in the State Bowl games. None of the remaining undefeated teams have had a season as dominant as Oceanside. With a team filled with a bunch of seniors playing at their finest, the Pirates must be in deep consideration for a shot at a state title. Six seniors currently have Division I scholarships to various colleges, and for many, it would be the highlight of their careers so far to make it to such a prestigious level.

But the Pirates must now sit and wait for their fates to be decided. No amount of dominance can aid in their quest for a state championship. The city of San Diego will cross its fingers, hoping that the CIF commissioners will make the right decision by selecting Oceanside to prove themselves against the finest in the nation.
