NFL Teams That Have Never Been to a Super Bowl

The New Orleans Saints Super Bowl victory shortened the list of teams that have never been to the big game. The list is now down to four cities that are desperate for their team to make it to the cherished Super bowl.

Detroit Lions – The Lions have been labeled as one of the worst franchises in NFL history. They have not won a championship in 53 years. They have the embarrassing distinction of being the only team to go 0-16 during a season.  The Lions have only won one playoff game since their championship in 1957. The future does not look bright as every other team in their division looks to be playoff contender next season.

Cleveland Browns – The Browns began play in 1946. They proved to a be a great team in the early days by winning 8 league championships and 4 NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl era. Despite their early success and 6 AFC Central titles, they have never reached the Super Bowl. The Browns were de-activated as an NFL franchise from 1996-1999. The current team was relocated as the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland was given a new team with the same name in 1999. The Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2000 which added more misery to the already hurting Cleveland fans. Cleveland holds the dubious distinction as the only NFL city to never  have a team in the Super Bowl or to host the event.

Houston Texans – The Texans have only been in the NFL since 2002, but Houston’s Super Bowl drought runs much longer. Houston first had a professional football team called the Oilers that began play in the defunct American Football League in 1960. After the league joined the NFL in 1970, the Oilers managed to make it to the AFC championship game twice but fell to the Pittsburg Steelers both times. The Oilers moved to Nashville in 1997 and advanced to the Super Bowl in 1999. Houston’s current team, the Texans, are the only current NFL team that has never been to the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars – The Jaguars are a relatively new team joining the NFL in 1995. In this short period of time they have made the playoffs 6 times and made it to the AFC championship in 1999. Their success in the 15 year history of the franchise suggests that the team’s inclusion on this list might be short lived.

I think some of them are pretty new teams. I am glad that my team 49ers won 5 superbowls but that was a long long time ago.
