When kids play such a high-impact sport as football, there’s bound to be some violent collisions. This is why it is extremely important that kids who play football are outfitted with the correct kids football gear.

Professional organizations across the country are responsible for laying out safety rules for kids’ football. These organizations include the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and other smaller local youth sports organizations. All of these groups control the basic safety rules for local school and town sports programs, and the organizations that sponsor the events, such as the schools where the sports take place, are obligated to following those rules.

It is also important to note that parents should be fully aware of those rules, and should always ensure that their children are ready to play the game well-protected with the right kind of kids football gear.

Important Gear for Sports Events

Those safety rules establish that kids must wear appropriate gear during football practice, but there are additional requirements during official games. General safety rules that the organizations listed above establish should be followed strictly throughout every game.

This gear includes:

  • A strong helmet that is sized and rated correctly for the age of the child
  • Pads for the hips, knees, tailbone, and thighs to protect the child’s midsection
  • Shoulder pads that soften any direct shoulder impact
  • A mouth guard with a strap – critical to protect the child’s teeth
  • Recommended cleats (make sure to only use age-appropriate cleats)
  • Appropriate eye protection, especially if the child requires glasses

When Playing For Fun

During football games that kids play in backyards and school fields, it’s critical that parents and other adults should supervise those games. Too many of these games go unsupervised, so there’s always the danger of injury if kids play anything other than touch football. Because kids often play unsupervised, it’s important to remind your children that there are many inherent dangers in the game of football if they don’t wear protective gear. Kids need to understand how easily they can get injured during the game. Advise your children to always stake the following precautions.

  • Always wear a helmet and shoulder and knee pads
  • Only play with other kids of the same age
  • Instead of playing tackle football, play touch football
  • Only play tackle football on grass

The important part is to make sure that kids wear enough protection and padding. The goal is to prevent serious injuries like broken bones, but preventing scratches and scrapes is obviously a nice bonus. Being tackled during tackle football can be a very great impact, especially damaging if the appropriate kids football gear is not worn. But wearing the appropriate gear, tack football can be a fun and very safe game.

Whenever kids play such high impact sports, they should always be supervised. So tell your kids to try to only play touch football when adults aren’t around. While they may not like it, it’s important for their own safety.
