College Football: The Best Teams of The Bcs Era

The best of the best.

The BCS has been in place for just over a decade.  For all of it’s faults, it has, for the most part, worked.  The cream of the crop seems to have risen to the top.  Over the years, there have been a number of repeat offenders, teams who have made several and even regular visits.  Here are the best of them; the teams that have regularly cashed those big BCS checks,

7. Texas Longhorns

The Longhorns have dominated over the BCS area, posting a record of 115-26.  They are undefeated in their 3 BCS Bowl appearances, including the Vince Young Championship.  They have finished the year ranked in the top 25 every year, including 5 top 5 finishes.

6.  LSU

The Tigers have had the disadvantage of playing in the brutal SEC along with Florida, but have still managed a 97-42 record, and are undefeated in 4 BCS Bowl games with 2 championships.

5.  Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners have run the big 12 along with the Longhorns, with a very similar 114-30 record.  They are tied for the most BCS Bowl game appearances with 7, but haven’t fared so well, winning just 2.  They have one Championship under coach Bob Stoops.  Their 4 Championship appearances are second only to Florida.

4.  Miami Hurricanes

While the Hurricanes have faded a bit from dominance the last few years, they still boast a 101-36 record.  They are 3-1 in BCS Bowl games, with a Championship in two appearances.

3.  USC Trojans

The only thing keeping the Trojans from the top of this list is the fact that they were mediocre for the better part of the first part of the era. 107-33 was their record in this time.  Over the last half, they have been the most dominant team by far.

2.  Florida Gators

At 106-35, the Gators were as dominant as anyone.  4-1 in BCS Bowls, and 2 Titles in as many tries.  Urban Meyer has turned them into a perennial powerhouse, taking them to heights even Spurrier didn’t.

And the #1 team of the BCS era:

Ohio State Buckeyes.

Jim Tressel has built a dynasty in Columbus.  They are on their way to an unprecedented 8th BCS game this year, and have won 4 of them.  Three Championship game appearances,  118 victories,  22 All Americans, 65 players sent to the NFL, a 26-10 record against ranked teams.  Every year the Buckeyes seem to re-load;  2009 was supposed to be a rebuilding year, yet here they are with 10 wins and in the mix once again.  And while teams like LSU and Miami have faded from dominance, the Buckeyes appear to be here for the long haul.
