Another NFL Draft is Over (2009)
How did the 32 NFL teams do in the 2009 Draft? Here are my thoughts.

The overall consensus is the Cleveland Browns did very well. Center Alex Mack should help right off the bat. They also got quality players at other need postitions.
Green Bay Packers helped themselves a bit. Especially with a good Nose Tackle. A position that Green Bay utilizes and when they have gotten good NT play, their defense has done well. I don’t think Clay Matthews was a big pick as ESPN does however.
The NY Giants did very well. OT William Beatty is a solid OL and they added depth at running back to replace the departing Ward. Their workhorse Jacobs needs a breather now and again. They also took care of their WR needs after canning Burress to the curb.
The Philadelphia Eagles had an unusually good draft. They normally try and outsmart the world but this year they went right at their needs with quality picks. Just their first 2 picks alone was enough to give the Philly lunatics hope. WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy will help a good offense lacking depth. Add the trades they made and the Eagles really had a great off season. TE Cornelious Ingram is consider and outstanding athlete when healthy.
The Houston Texans have decided they are going to shut people down. So they added strength to an already solid defense. If they get any offense they could flirt with the playoffs.
The Jacksonville Jaguars reloaded their biggest area of concern. Their depleted Offensive line. Including that they added Former Pro Bowl OT Tre Thomas from the Eagles. They added a huge DT that will help their run sopping.
The Seattle Seahawks did very well also. They plugged up some glaring holes. OL Max Unger is a projected legit starter.
The Baltimore Ravens quietly revved up their already potent run game by adding OL Michael Oher. They also took some defenders to fill in as the aging veterans move on.
The Cincinnati Bengals were on target for the most parts. They got the once coveted MLB Rey Maualuga from USC. If he lives up to billing? They are in business becuase their D stinks. They also brought in some raw talent but with some questions. Again if the talent wins out, the Bengals had themselves a great draft.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were in the enviable positition of retooling a Super Bowl winning team. It’s hard to say you have desperate needs when you are the defending champs. That said I thought they were a little lax with their attempts to add depth. They could have used more OL considerations. It does seem they had some kind of plan. It was a decent weekend for them.
The Arizona Cardinals, the Super Bowl losing team, did fairly well by adding some solid players to areas of need. RB Beanie Wells gives them another young back to push aging Edgrin James. Added some defense also.
Carolina Panthers added a monster OG and solidified there defense. They had a solid draft.
Many think the Detroit Lions did well. I am not so high on taking Matthew Stafford but who knows? None of the 2009 QB’s impressed me. The Lions stink, so it is hard to say how they did. They can’t get any worse.
Indianapolis Colts are famous for their QB, but the fact of the matter is when they don’t run the ball they are average. RB Donald Brown will help Joe Addai get the rushing attack back. Colts Gm Bill Polian always has at least a solid draft.
The Miami Dolphins may have gotten a nice CB in Vontae Davis, the rest I thought was window dressing. Although many of the sports media thought Miami did well. I don’t think they did.
New England Patriots did what they always do. Move away from high picks because they are already a good team and add quality players that can do what they want them to do. They always get something from the draft.
The New Orleans Saints got some good defenders. Overall thay had an average draft however.
The New York Jets had an average draft also. Others say good because they took QB Mark Sanchez. I think he is a fraud. Another Matt Lienhart to me. Overrated USC product. The Jets had a couple okay picks though.
San Diego Chargers is another team that knows how to draft. Customarily a deep team they did it again. Not great picks but useful picks. The got themselves a big RB in Gatrell Johnson. That should help their short yardage woes.
The Atlanta Falcons did an average job this year. Last season they did much better so maybe this year will add some depth?
The Buffalo Bills had a o hum draft. Couple decent picks but they did not replace their loss of ALL PRO OT Jason Peters!
Chicago Bears did okay considering they traded a bunch of good picks for QB Jay Cutler.
The Kansas City Chiefs, once a proud franchise, just doesn’t get it. They may have gotten a player or two. Maybe?
The Minnesota Vikings may have a great WR if the guy stops being a knucklehead. If the Massive OL Phil the Load Loadholt can actually play in the NFL they may have made Adrian Peterson happy. He is big and strong but reportedly very unskilled. Vikings didn’t do much.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did what they always do. Find an excuse to take another QB. Even with Gruden gone they are in love with fresh QB’s. QB Josh Freeman however is just an arm. Can you say Kyle Boller? Not much else to say about the Buc’s draft in my opinion.
The Tennessee Titans fortunately are a very good team with few holes because I don’t get their draft strategy. They may have added depth?
Denver Broncos added RB Knowshon Moreno and not much else depsite all the moving and shaking around the draft board and with extra picks to boot. It looks like rookie head coach Josh McDaniels had to much say.
The San Francisco 49ers did okay to real good if WR Michael Crabtree and RB Glen Coffee are as good as I think.
The Washington Redskins are still in confusion. Although I think DL/LB Brian Orakpo will be good. The rest? Looks like the old dart board method.
The Dallas Cowboys were short on picks so I can’t be too hard on them. They did what they could, which wasn’t much. They even pick a QB. Stephen McGee from Texas A&M.
And finally the Oakland Raiders. Well they did need a WR. Derrius Heyward-Bey was on some peoples draft board but not as the 7th pick of the draft with Michael Crabtree out there. But he may turn out fine. All in all the Raiders took the weekend off.
