2009-2010 NFL Playoff Picture

A look at the playoff scene.

AFC

Indianapolis Colts (14-0)

The Colts have nothing to play for but perfection.  They have already clinched the top seed, and the home field advantage through the AFC playoffs that go along with it.

Remaining games:  NY Jets (7-7) @Buffalo (5-9)

San Diego Chargers (11-3)

Either one more win or one loss by the Pats and the chargers clinch the #2 seed.

Remaining Games:  @Tennessee (7-7) Washington (4-9)

New England Patriots (9-5)

The Pats win a tiebreaker with the Bengals, so they just have to keep pace to lock up the #3 seed.  They could lose the AFC east title if they lose their last two and Miami wins out.  Still a pretty good shot as a wild card in that case.

Remaining Games: Jacksonville (7-7) @Houston (7-7)

Cincinnati Bengals (9-5)

Unless they can finish with better record than Pats, they should be the #4 seed.  Only way they lose AFC north is if they lose both games and the Ravens win out.

Remaining Games: Kansas City (3-11)  @NY Jets (7-7)

Baltimore Ravens (8-6)

Win out, and they’re in.  Even if they win one, they should be OK.  Lose out?  they’re screwed.  Should be OK… as long as they beat Oakland.

Remaining Games:  @Pittsburgh (7-7) @Oakland (5-9)

Denver Broncos (8-6)

They control their own fate, but there’s nothing sure here.  if they lose to both Philly and KC, they will sit home for the playoffs.

Remaining Games:  @Philadelphia (10-4) Kansas City (3-11)

Jacksonville Jaguars (7-7)

They obviously need to win out, and hope that someone ahead stumbles.  Best bet is for Denver to fall.

Remaining games: @New England (9-5) @Cleveland (3-11)

Miami Dolphins (7-7)

Still an outside shot at winning AFC east; would need to win their last 2 and New England lose last 2.  Otherwise, they would need either Denver or Baltimore to lose out and keep pace with the Jaguars. Actually a better shot of winning division.  New England could very well loseto both Jacksonvill and Houston, anf the Dolphins could win out.  Either way it’s still a halfway decent shot they’ll make it.

Remaining Games: Houston (7-7) Pittsburgh (7-7)

New York Jets (7-7)

The Jets are alive only mathematically.  They would have to knock off both the Colts and Bengals, and have almost everyone above them blow it.  Not gonna happen.

Remaining Games:  @Indianapolis (14-0) Cincinnati (9-5)

Pittsburgh Steelers (7-7)

Would take a miracle.  Even if they beat both Baltimore and Miami, they lose most of the tie breakers.

Remaining Games:  Baltimore (8-6) Miami (7-7)

Houston Texans (7-7)

Kudos to the Texans for even being in this conversation.  But it ain’t gonna happen.

Remaining Games:  San Diego (11-3) @Seattle (5-9)

Houston Texans (7-7)

Ok… (deep breath)..ah, never mind.

Remaining Games: @Miami (7-7) New England (9-5)

NFC

New Orleans Saints (13-1)

Clinch top seed with one more win or one more loss by Minnesota.  Pretty safe bet.

Remaining Games: Tampa Bay (2-12) @Carolina (6-8)

Minnesota Vikings (11-3)

Vikings are suddenly looking to hold onto that first round bye.  Clinch with 2 wins, or 1 win and 1 philly loss, or 2 Eagles losses.  Should manage to hold on.

Remaining Schedule:  @Chicago (5-9) New York Giants (8-6)

Philadelphia Eagles (10-4)

Clinch division with one more win or one more Dallas loss.  Both of their remaining games are against teams fighting for their playoff lives, so who knows?  And The Cardinals are right there in the rear view looking for that #3 seed.

Remaining Schedule:  Denver (8-6) @Dallas (9-5)

Arizona Cardinals (9-5)

Clinched NFC west in what… October? Should end up as #4 seed.

Remaining Games:  St Louis (1-13) Green Bay (9-5)

Green Bay Packers (9-5)

It looks good for the Packers.  Win against Seattle at home, or against an Arizona team that will likely have nothing to play for, and they’re in.

Remaining Schedule: Seattle (5-8) @Arizona (9-5)

Dallas Cowboys (9-5)

Could still win NFC east if they win out and Philly loses out.  Wild cars with a combination of one win and one New York Giants loss, 2 wins, or two Giants losses.

Remaining Games:  Washington (4-10)  Philadelphia (10-4)

New York Giants (8-6)

It ain’t easy.  Win 2 cowboys lose 1, they get in.  win one, cowboys lose 2, in.  Probably not going to happen, but it could.

Remaining Games:  Carolina (6-8) @Minnesota (11-3)
