You will need to buy another one next spring when your fishing license that you bought from the year before, expired. Each state has different fees for their fishing licenses. In the state of Indiana, during the season of 2009 it costs a mere $17.00 to get the fishing license. So why in the heck do you need a fishing license? Well, each year conservation officers go around popular public fishing areas and check to see if you’ve got a license.
If you don’t, you’ll need to pay the state some hefty fees. You’ll get a ticket, just like you do when you commit a driving violation. Both years in 2008, and 2009 I’ve seen conservation offers go through the rivers near my town checking people for their licenses. Any person caught without the fishing license will have to pay for the ticket they get. Maybe your thinking, well I’m going out in Timbuktu two to go fishing, so why do I need one?
Ok, maybe no one will find you, but its still possible an officer could stop and check for your license while you are fishing. It’s certainly better to be safe than sorry. Plus, the fees you pay for the license go to good causes for your state. Clean water, public access, fish stocking and other state programs are help paid for with these fees. So its not like the state is taking your money and using it for themselves. It’s going back out to help you.

Like it was discussed before, you want to get a fishing license for the state you live in. When you do, you can only use that license for that particular state. When you go out and buy a fishing license for the state of Indiana, it can only be used in Indiana. So what happens when you travel out of state to go fishing? You’ll need to buy a license for that state also. Its not required that you buy a full year license. You can buy a fishing license for a smaller time frame when you buy one.
Don’t forget this when you go on trips out of state and want to go fishing. Just like in your own state, if you’re caught fishing without the license, you’ll have to pay the state a fee. It’s possible that since you’re an out of state person, you might have to pay a higher ticket. And if you buy a full year fishing license for another state, your fees will also be higher than for a person living there. However, since you are on vacation, you should only think about buying one of the short term fishing licenses.
This is why you need to get a fishing license before you go fishing. In Indiana, the full year fishing license lasts until the end of March of the next year. After that, you need to buy another one for the next year. Is it really worth it getting a ticket and having to pay a high fee? Just go to your local fishing license location and purchase one for a small fee. This fee is coming back to you anyway with your hobby of fishing. Don’t forget to carry your fishing license with you after you get it (preferably in your wallet so you’ll always have it).
