1. Buy a fishing rod from any local retailer or any fishing shop. If you are a beginner look for rod and reel combos which are good value for it will last you for at least 2 years.

2. Buying the correct line is essential as you do not want to use line of high strength on a rod used for light fishing as the rod will snap before the line does. Buy line that is within your fishing rods appropriate line weight so that the line will break before you rod does. If you are not sure about which line to purchase, ask the person working at the shop and they will give you professional advice.

3. Attach your line to your fishing rods reel and carefully wind it in, keep an eye on the line coming into the reel and keep some tension on the line so that it wont tangle on the reel.

4. After putting line onto you reel, thread it through the leaders (rings) attached to you fishing rod. If you have a telescoping or 2 piece fishing rod make sure that it is fully extended.

5. After threading out roughly 1-2 meters if line from the fishing rod, it is time to attach the terminal tackle. This is essential because how you set up your tackle determines what type of fish species you catch. Choose a type of tackle rig that will suit the area that you are fishing in e.g. Offshore Paternoster Rigs for fishing on a boat offshore and a General Running Rig for fishing in estuaries and bays. For beginners it is recommended that you use a General running rig as it can be used in more places and requires less skill to set up.

6. For tying swivels and hooks, it is recommended that the Blood Knot is used. To learn how to tie this knot go to any local fishing shop or on online websites.

7. Now you are ready to fish, use baits such as Prawns, Blood worms and mullet gut. Steak and chicken gut are also known for attracting certain fish such as Silver Bream and Snapper.

9. When a fish bites, let it get a few bites on your bait. Do not move the bait around too much when a fish is biting or you’ll scare them off and when you feel the fish take the bait (there will be hard jerk on the line and your rod will bend over) set the hook by pulling up on the fish and reel it in.

Good luck with your fishing. ;)

I tried fishing once, but it didn’t turn out very well. My husband got a good laugh at me though.

An apt article for the saying “Instead of giving them fish, teach them how to fish.” But I’d rather you go fish. Leave the cooking and eating to me. Great hobby Denus.

Good article! We have always fished. Did you know some fish will go for Ivory soap? I was taught it in Louisiana, and wouldn’t have believed it if we didn’t have the fish we caught for dinner!
