The X Games were dreamed up by the sports television network ESPN. They debuted during the summer of 1994 in Newport an Providence, Rhode Island.
The games were supposed to take place every two years. But the first games were so popular, organizers made it an annual competition.
The summer games include bke stunts, Moto X, skateboarding, surfing, inline skating and wakeboarding.
Probably the most famous “extreme” athlete is skateboarder Tony Hawk. He was the first skateboarder to land a 900 trick in the halfpipe competition. A 900 is two and a half complete midair rotations on the skateboard. Its called 900 because one complete spin is 360 degrees around (like a circle) and 2.5 x 360 =900.
The winter games include snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiling. At the 2007 games, superstar snowboarder Shaun White came up short in two events he has dominated for the past several years: superpipe and slopestyle. Norway’s Andreas Wiig took home gold in the women’s snowboard slopestyle title, becoming the youngest athlete to medal in the games. Skier Tanner Hall won his sixth gold medal in the men’s superpipe, leaving his rival Simon Dumont with silver medal.
