Prepare for a Long Journey

When the sun comes out in the UK, it’s time to enjoy a drive out to the countryside. We all know about Devon and Cornwall and their miles of beaches, but the south east is also well served for coastline. In West Sussex, down towards Chichester is a wide sandy beach called West Wittering.

The beach has been a popular summer spot since the early 1950s, when a group of local residents successfully bought the land, warding off plans by Billy Butlin – of Butlin’s holidays fame – and the National Union of Mineworkers to develop the area into a holiday complex. The local residents were keen that the area should remain rural and undeveloped, and so it remains to this day.

The beach is well known for its series of 156 beach huts along the top, which are in fact privately owned. Visitors to the beach who are interested in purchasing one can sign up to be included on a mailing list; sales are conducted by a sealed bid. In the meantime, simply set up a tent on the beach and while away the hours with your friends and family.

Horse riding is permitted on the beach before 9am and after 6pm when the tide is low and there are fewer visitors. Horse riding along a beach is a wonderful activity whenever the weather permits, so drive down early, or stay late for a chance to see the coastline from horseback.

If you have an interest in windsurfing, you will need to join the West Wittering Windsurf Club. You can pay for board hire and tuition, and spend some time riding the waves. The club also offers kite surfing as an activity.

If you’re planning a long drive down to the coast, you will need to make sure that your car is in tip top condition to avoid any problems. As well as checking your tyres and mud guards, you should also check your wheel trims. Fitting new wheel trims can transform the look of your car, and will guarantee you a smooth ride. If you are unsure which size to go for, you can simply check your tyres. The rim diameter will be printed on the tyre, as well as some other measurements; it is the rim diameter that dictates what size wheel trims to buy. If your tyres have a diameter of 16” for example, then that is the size you will need.
