To teach your horse how to trot, she needs to knowhow to lead and tie up quiely and camly, if she does not, go here to teach her :

Now,  Lead her around, get her warmed up, then lead her a little faster, let her get used to this, and then go faster, and so on a so forth until she is almost trotting. Then stop, reward her and tell she is a good girl. Do this  exercise about ten times like this > walk/quick walk/faster walk/very fast.  then when she has got this instilled in her head, ease up the pace until she is trotting.

There is three things you must remember whilst doing this activity.

  • don’t let her get bored, keep the work interesting and full on.
  • never let your mind stray from your work.
  • reward with pats, not food, because they are bribes.

Keep her trotting for a while (you have to be fit yourself for this) and teach her that when she trots it is until you want her to stop.  End the lesson and treat her with some food. this is a treat to say well done, not a bribe to say do it again?.

In the next lesson, get her trotting around to warm her up, by now you should have special command for trot that you use whenever you start her trotting. Now i want you to lay some small but long logs on the ground, approximately 15cm in width and two lengths of your horse apart. Now walk her over them, get her used to them, show her there is nothing to be afraid of. As she becomes more confident, bring the logs closer together, until they are just one horse length apart, then begin to trot her over them, expect her to baulk the first few times, but be patient and remember that this is entirely new to him/her

once your horse is okay with trotting over the logs she is ready for the saddle, but this is in the third lesson.

Saddle her up and lead her over the logs at a steady trot. Then mount her and walk her over them about 10 times, then ease her into a trot and be prepared for a baulk. repeat these steps until she is trotting easily over the logs. take her out into the paddock and trot her around for a while. When she does this and stops when you want her to, you can then say she has learnt it.

happy riding!
