Horses: A Necessity in Life

A brief reflection on how important horses are to me and my family.

I love horses. They are amazing, loving, patient creatures. Ever since I was a small child, I realized how special these animals were; I have always dreamed of having my own horse farm. That would be the perfect job.

Lately, I have been riding horses where my daughters take horseback riding lessons. Their instructor taught me when I was younger, and now she is teaching them. She calls it “second generation teaching.” It is pretty cool, because not only are they riding at the same place I learned to love riding, they are passionate about it as well. It is such a unique feeling, to work with a horse and make a true bond. It cannot be properly explained to someone who does not know horses. These animals are patient, kind, and loving; they take care of us physically and psychologically. Horses are great friends, listeners, companions, and partners in life. As I write this, I miss my horse so much. One day, when we have the farm up and running, I will have a horse again. It will not be the same as the horses I have had before, but I will have horses again.

Along with horses comes responsibility. They are expensive! Veterinary care, hoof care, feed, hay, and fencing materials add up quickly. You have to keep them on a schedule: the farrier comes out every 4-6 weeks and the vet comes out to vaccinate seasonally. Horses must be kept well-fed, exercised, and sheltered. Although it is a lot of work to have horses, it is so worth it. You can build a true friendship and bond with these animals by simply caring for them and training them. Basic interaction on a daily basis will strengthen the bond every day. Of course, that does mean you have to set aside time each and every day to be at the barn caring for your horses, but it is time well-spent in my opinion. What you get in return from these gentle giants is like nothing else, which is part of the reason I am so thrilled that my children are learning to love horses as well.

Annabelle and Evie are going to a horse show this weekend. This is Annabelle’s second year showing, but it will be Evie’s second horse show. They are both so excited to be able to go to a show and ride their best. There’s something about riding at a show that is so satisfying, even if you do not get a ribbon or award. Just knowing that you went in there and gave it your all is such a great feeling. Of course, it is nice to win, but being able to show everyone what you have done with your horse is rewarding as well. If you continue going to the same show series each month, people recognize you and your horse. They remember you and observe the milestones you achieve each month. Nope, there is nothing else quite like a good horse show. That is why I am so pleased to have the opportunity for my children to show; it is opening the door to a whole new world for them.

These pictures remind me of when I was a young equestrian.

Indeed, these photos of my little ones bring back memories for me as well. I am so happy that they love to ride as much as I do!
