The Tour De France on Google Earth
Tour de France fans are given a new chance to stay informed and to get news from the route. Last year the historic Tour was displayed in “StreetView” by Google; now we can watch it in 3D.

In 2008 we watched Tour de France per Google StreetView and we were excited. Any minute we could see the stages, news and photos

Each of the 21 stages is clearly marked on the map. Google Maps will gradually establish a long line of more than 3 500 km of the coast of Brittany around 21 sharp bends famous Alpe d’Huez edge until the final pavement Champs Elysees.
Furthermore, this year we can ride the race with them in 3D!
Christian Prudhomme, race director, is happy for fans of the Tour de France. “They are fully immersed in the race, examine the degree to which will become the winners, to explore the city and the route that Peloton passes. The audience certainly take this news as a pleasant surprise and I am proud that, like the Tour de France will help to reveal the beauty of Google Maps over France. ”
Ioannis Kalafatis, Google Maps Product Manager, adds: “We appreciate that we can be part of such a large sporting events such as Tour De France, (…) Google Earth for running route Tour de France is helping to make the race in new, exciting form. ”

According to Peter Birch, “when you’re trying to understand the Herculean effort that these cyclists go through in stages like L’Alpe d’Huez, or which streets in Paris the final stage will pass through, 2D maps just aren’t as compelling.”
Nowadays you are able to make sense of it all from bird perspective yourself. KML file hosted on the official Tour de France website lets you explore the whole route overlaid by Google Earth. Tour is in the 3/4 of the full length but many surprises still wait for us.
