The battle between England and Australia for the Ashes, has been settled. England’s demolition of the once-indestructible Australian juggernaut, has had a profound effect on the cricketing world. The majority of cricket fans around the world are delighted that the oh-so-arrogant Aussies have been put in their place. For many, the cherry on the top has been the fining of Ricky Ponting for his unprofessional and immature outburst at the decision of an umpire, and for many, the cream on the cherry is the understanding that Ponting will play no further part in ther series.

For the better part of a decade, the Australians beat all and sundry, in both tests, and the shorter form of the game. They annoyed and enraged people with their swagger and their supreme confidence. No-one could deny, that at the height of their success, the Baggy Greens were a delight to watch, were superb in every aspect of the game, and that their ilk will not be seen again in a hurry. But it is an indisputable fact that sports fans love to see the top teams fail, and that the failure of the Australian Cricket Team to recover the Ashes from an England team that has not, until the present, been too highly regarded, was a case of them getting what was coming to them.

But there is another indisputable fact, namely, that the Aussies will not be down and out for long. It is just not in their character to lay down and die!

I really cannot talk intelligently about cricket as I know nothing about it. But it must be fun. I think that is the game that the rich people in movies play.
