Gautam Gambhir and his Kolkata Knight Riders will face a tough challenge to get their first win of the season as they travel to the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, a place in which the Royals have lost just 5 IPL matches in 18.
In a rain shortened game at Kolkata, the Knight Riders struggled to set a decent 97 in 12 overs. KKR’s big name top 3 contributed just 29 relying on number 7 Laxmi Shukla’s 26 from 17 balls to give them a chance. It was KKR’s bowling which let them down in the end, allowing a promoted Irfan Pathan to fire Delhi to a win with 5 balls spare.
Rahul’s Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start on Friday, fired to a 31 run win over King’s XI by Ajinkya Rahane’s accomplished 98. It was Kevon Cooper’s all-round performance, however, which got tongues wagging. The West Indian all-rounder faced 3 balls for 11 runs, took 4-26, 2 catches and was involved in a run-out. Given the chance higher up the order, the strapping 23 year-old could produce some Gayle/Pollardian fireworks.
The Knight Riders’ bowling will need a little something extra to restrict Rahane and the Royal’s lower-order hitters, and that something extra could prove to be another young West Indian. Sunil Narine, eschewing a test debut in favour of IPL riches, has to play and display the control which he showed against Australia last month.
While the toss could prove key, as it so often does in short-form matches, the captain’s use of it will be critical. So far in IPL 5 captains have looked to chase, but the last 4 matches have been won by the side batting first.
