In the last few years there has been a big debate over whether or not cheerleading school be counted as a sport or not. Many colleges and people do not consider cheerleading a sport when really it is a sport.
To have something be considered a sport there is a certain criteria that has to be met. If you look up the word sport in a dictionary it reads “physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.” Because of this criteria i feel like cheerleading should be considered a sport.
I myself am a high school varsity cheerleader and while looking at colleges to apply to I discovered that many colleges do not consider cheerleading to be a sport but count it as a club or student activity. I found this to be very annoying as cheerleaders have to put in as much work as other athletes if not more. I currently am active in two high school sports and have been active in countless sports in the past both competitive and noncompetitive.
Cheerleaders practice just as much and as hard as ther cheerleaders. My current squad practices between 11 and 14 hours a week. Cheerleaders have to work very hard and for competitive cheerleading squads there is more stuff outside of main practice. On top of practice with the group many cheerleaders have to go to tumbling lessons on their own time and practicing routines. Also cheerleaders have multiple responsiblities every week. A normal week for cheerleading consists of: Practice everyday, Tumbling lessons (1-2 per week), game to perform at, and finally competitions. On the competition end of cheerleading they have to perform: motions, dancing, 2 cheers, stunting, and tumbling most routines are about 3 minutes long and determin the score for the squad for the whole competition.
To many cheerleading looks like an easy activity of putting on a uniform and bouncing around but many hours go into preparing for one rountine.
Because of all the work and physical activity that is required in cheerleading it is and should be considered a sport on all levels.
