Why Marquez Makes a Whole Lot More Sense Than Mayweather!

Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol – In the wake of Philippine pride and boxing’s most sought-after superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s (50-3-2, 38 KOs) demolition job of erstwhile welterweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto (34-2-0, 27 KOs) of Puerto Rico on the way to a record 7th world title in as many weight divisions, talks about a potential blockbuster showdown with superbly talented, yet awfully untested “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (40-0-0, 25 KOs) of the United States have created so much buzz that one would be led to believe that this titanic encounter is already in the bag… but hold your horses, fight fans! Though early reports have indicated both parties’ interest for this megabout, at least on the financial aspect of it, I, however, have serious doubts that Mayweather would win the lottery for Pacquiao’s next opponent in the first place. Before you dismiss the whole idea for a fact that this is really just my personal opinion, read on and try to think about the reasons behind this rather radical point of view.

Pacquiao is running for a political office. That’s already given and just like the last Philippine elections about three years ago, nobody can still stop him from doing something that he has put his mind into, perhaps even if he’s at a huge disadvantage. You see, Manny will always be Manny whether he’s inside or outside the ring. By now, your impatient mind might already be wondering, “so what?” Okay, here’s the deal. Running for office entails huge amounts of time and effort, not to mention that it is very physically demanding, to say the least. If Team Pacquiao chooses to go for Mayweather, don’t you think that would do him well not having his full attention in what could arguably go down as the most important bout in his illustrious boxing career and probably the one that will put him on the same breath as, or even surpass, the likes of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson in the elite list of all-time greats? Your guess is as good as mine!

Fighting someone of Mayweather’s caliber requires careful planning and strategic preparation. It is almost impossible for Pacquiao to have his full and undivided attention in training for the fight of his life if he also has to go campaigning to far-flung areas of his congressional district. Of course, Manny has always been a master of multi-tasking. However, this one’s different. Mayweather and politics are a whole different story than say, Cotto, concerts and Wapakman (the film) altogether. It’s certainly not worth the risk.

Here’s were Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs) comes in. The Mexican counter-puncher is in the perfect position to negotiate a third installment of their two explosive encounters for three main reasons. The first reason is that Pacquiao’s win over Marquez at junior lightweight was far from being decisive. Pacquiao, for his part, would not want a question mark in his resume, especially looking back when his career is over and done with. If Pacquiao is able to defeat Marquez decisively this time around, which I expect he will at 140 or 142 lbs, then that question mark  will be replaced with an exclamation point. Second, Pacquiao could go for a knockout, which I think is also inevitable before the 6th round (my early prediction), and use this as a huge bargaining chip for the eventual showdown with Mayweather, who wasn’t able to stop the considerably smaller Marquez when they traded mitts a few months back. And finally, the third reason being that fighting Marquez would not require a whole bunch of scouting and planning new strategies and/or training regimen that demand a lot of time and effort, considering the fact that by now Team Pacquiao very much knows Marquez pretty well already. The same cannot be said if Pacquiao opts to fight Mayweather.

Pacquiao-Marquez III might not be as huge as Pacquiao-Mayweather would be. Pacman-Pretty Boy is definitely what we all want to see… but any moment soon is not the right time for it, particularly for Pacquiao., unless he drops his political plans, which is close to impossible. Nevertheless, a bout with Marquez is still historically significant and probably financially viable, especially for the person who could go down in history as the G.O.A.T of this sport, unquestionably… and undeniably!

    logical but highly unlikely….

MP is going for a September bout given he can not fight this March bec he needs time heal and prepare for the elections. Don’t be surprised if he instead runs for senator, or at least gets adopted by one of those blood sucking political parties. He doesn’t have to campaign, he can win even in absentia. And yes, he’s going to win.

The September bout will push through with Mayweather. Win or lose, that will be his final fight.

Marquez would get killed by this new and improved Pacquiao. This Pacquiao is way different from the Pacquiao he faced at super featherweight.

good views but in my opinion, Marquez will be no match for Pacman, for the sole reason.. age, Juan will be too old then. Regarding PBF guess, Pacman will have his hands full if ever they meet.

There is no sense fighting Marquez at this stage because Floyd already toyed with him. If Paquiao defeats floyd, then the his win against Marquez will not be questioned anymore.
Marquez can be his farewell fight, which will be more interesting…

  12. Posted November 17, 2009 at 3:40 am

Why Marquez??? Yes he put up a good fight against Manny twice but that was at the time when Manny was only a one dimensional fighter. Since then Manny has developed into a -3 dimensional fighter unleashing punches from any angles that all his badly beaten foes – Diaz, Dela Hoya, Hatton and Cotto are one in saying they did not see where the punches were coming. Pacquiao should stay at 147 and anytime soon should fight with and win over Shane Mosley for another welterweight belt. To me Shane is more deserving than Mayweather at this point in time. After that if Mayweather dodges, then Pacquiao should challenge Yuri Foreman for the middleweight belt and a possible 8 tiltles. Fighting Marquez for the 3rd time will only degrade Pacquiao’s level and class. Why? People want to see a Manny-Floyd fight. And why then is Manny to fight Marquez when the latter was easily beaten by Floyd? It makes no sense to me.

I want MP to go back to his more natural weight at 140 lbs. where he is more quick and destroy JMM. This time the old man will have his retirement sealed for sure. PBF should pick opponents in his own size if he wants to be called P4P again. And If the fight with MP will push thru I want him to come down to 143 lbs. and besides he’s not getting the lions share either. Let me say 70 for MP and 30 for PBF.

No. Let the man retire. He has nothing more to prove. His fight with marquez was really close but he won it anyway. As to Mayweather, nakita mo naman kung paano naging boring yung last three rounds nila ni Cotto eh 12 rounds pa kaya with Mayweather? Wala naman tayong mapapanood dyan kundi habulang-biik. Alam mo naman si Mayweather, ayaw matamaan sa mukha yan kaya walang salpukan tayong maaasahan dyan. BORING.

No sense in fighting Marquez. Nothing is proven if MP beats Marquez again , he\’s been beaten by PBF anyway. Go MP vs PBF , this fight has a lot to reveal…

  21. Posted November 17, 2009 at 5:57 am

A 3rd fight for Marquez is nonsense. The Pacman has nothing to prove more for Marquez. It should be for Floyd ‘coz as Roach said ‘It’s the fight that the World wants to see’… But I think it will not materialize. Floyd wont accept 30% – 40% share of the pot. Best option will be – the PACMAN will go for the No. 8 Title of Yuri Foreman at 154. 2nd option, he can go for the Mosley vs Berto winner.. Then after, if he wants to grant the request of the world, he shall give Floyd a 50-50 down the wire offer and make the fight infront of his countrymen, then after that, he can retire as the greatest of them all.

I dont buy Marquez fight not worthy and no match to Pacman. And Mayweather will not call Pacman for a fight. He is too awkward and afraid after he saw what happened to Cotto in the hands of Pacquiao. Mosley would be the logical choice but he opted to fight Berto he can’t wait for the Pacman Cotto bout result because he is afraid of Pacman. Refer to Arums statement about Mosley in the post fight media conference. Most of the boxing experts wonder why Mosley and Golden Boy Promotions announce the fight with Berto in the afternoon of Pacquiao and Cotto’s fight. Why? is Mosley afraid of Pacman that he may be next in the line. Now who si ducking who? hehehe All of you boxers wannabe Pacman will gobble you up one by one. You didn’t learn your lesson under-estimating the power and skills of Pacman huh. Whatever words you said you will eat later.

i agree with you that a third bout with marquez should happen.
BUT, remember, boxing is also business, i really believe after marquez loss to mayweather that people will be too interested to watch marquez again, especially, after pacquiao destroyed cotto. i just dont think this would sell as great as the first two bouts.
and also, most boxing fans would really think that marquez now would really be no match for pacquiao, as the fans really believe that mayweather vs pacquiao, would be the best logical fight today.

After last Saturday’s performance of Pacman, Marquez is no longer marketable to fight for trilogy. I think 99.99% Mayweather-Pacman will come true. I think is just a matter of proper and fair negotiations between the two. The money involved is huge and it will be become a fight of the century. Furthermore, I think both if these fighters will retire after the fight.

  31. chuck
    Posted November 17, 2009 at 11:44 am

I read the content. I disagree even more. There’s nothing to prove by going for a trilogy. How many times more do we have to doubt Manny before realizing that he actually knows what he’s doing? How many times has he proven his skeptics wrong despite all the (perceived) distractions around him? Many people forget that Manny has a personal goal: to be the very best of his time. The money comes with the territory, but Floyd is now the man seen as the one who stands in the way of Manny’s goal…so why not go for it already and secure his legacy? Continuing to fight after he defeats Floyd (trust me, Andrew) would be icing on the cake. As for JMM, this aging fighter already blew his chances for a trilogy a number of times…and let me cite 3: One, when he overpriced himself for a 3rd fight with Manny and ended up being a loser by ending-up fighting Chris John (we know what happened there)…Two, when he confronted Manny with a cheap publicity stunt and dared him to accept a challenge for a 3rd meeting in front of his countrymen. If you ask me, he deserves a far worse punishment than falling from Manny’s punches a 5th, 6th, or 7th time should they meet again. That punishment is simply denying him a chance to earn a living. Tell me, which is more damaging on a long-term basis?…and Three, defeating Floyd would have been JMM’s last chance to make a case for a trilogy. and his performance against Floyd told many that he wouldn’t have what it takes to beat a much better, faster, and stronger Pacquiao than the one he faced in early 2008. JMM painted himself in a corner, and is even less marketable now than he was a year ago. As a matter of fact, he should feel lucky to have made some money for fighting Floyd…..NOW is the time for Manny to take-on Floyd and respond to all the trash talk Floyd has dished-out with the usual way he always has…with his fists! Atter he achieves his “ultimate goal” of being the best of his time, he can have that trilogy as an encore if he wishes just to please himself and fight fans as well. By that time, he gets to inflict more punishment on an even older JMM by dictating how little he gets to earn (and beat the hell out of him come fight time)…but that can wait for a later time. People just have to remember one thing: Manny knows what’s going on, and hears what JMM and Floyd are saying about him. He also knows what’s best for him, so this article doesn’t hold any water.

A lot of noise coming from fludan watery mouth now…but my opinion is if manny will fight him for what?????.Fludan dont have any belt compare to manny pacquiao which having a lot of belt and another thing is a 7 division world title….for sure fludan will do dirty tactics so that manny will lose the fight thats why if this fight will happen its better to fight outside the US territory….but for me it will not happen since fludan was only talking that he wants to fight pacquiao but inside his mind he’s afraid of what might happen to him during the fight…fludan tactics is somewhat far most than manny pacquiao…boxing is a sport who’s tactics and power are more reliable..but unlike fludan he used to run, dance, hug, and covering most of the time on his shoulder what kind of a boxer this fludan…lol

  33. Posted November 17, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Sorry paisano. I have to disagree with you on this one. The Pacman has nothing to prove anymore to Marquez. Pacman just beat up Cotto who could easily put Marquez to sleep in early rounds. The world wants Floyd. I for one will take a trip to Vegas to witness the big mouth gets beaten up worst than Diaz, de la Hoya, Hatton and Cotto combine. It will even add more to the Pacman’s all time world greatness aside from his biggest payday. It will also be the greatest boxing event in modern times.

Marquez should have been a great draw if only he hasn’t fought Floyd and lost. also,If Manny lost to Hatton and Cotto then Fans would definitely would want to close the chapter between the Pacman and the Dinamita.
The Dinimita has no more explosiveness left in him…without a doubt he will again expire Marquez.

There is no use. Why should Pacquiao fight Marquez again? Pacquiao doesn’t need Marquez at this point. He already beaten Cotto who is one of the best welterweights. Marquez is already a left-over of both Pacquiao and PBF. Winning against an old and overweight Marquez will have no positve impact on Pacquiao’s credentials. Pacquiao is considered an ATG now without fighting PBF or Marquez.

  40. Doria
    Posted November 17, 2009 at 3:15 pm

JMM is already an old and shot fighter. Winning against him, considering he is also a PBF left-over, is not a plus on Pacquiao’s resume. PBF is the most logical opponent at this time and second will be Moseley.

I live in Vegas and talked to a lot of people about this fight. They won’t pay to see a third fight with JMM. We all know Pac would destroy him. I won’t pay for it. Instead I’d watch it for free somewhere else only because I want to see Manny KO Marquez. I think even Mexicans know JMM don’t stand a chance and won’t be too interested in that fight. Won’t do anything for Manny’s legacy at this point. Odds would probably be 6-1

I used to want to see a 3rd MP-JMM fight because their previous fights raised so many doubts in my mind as to how good Manny is. I needed to see Manny beat the guy convincingly because I wanted to erase that asterisk in his resume. (merely a point separates the two warriors) After witnessing Firepower last Sunday, I am now convinced that JMM has absolutely no chance of making things even with MP.

But I think he will be good practice before a Mayweather match. So if JMM is brave enough to call out Manny for a fight this March at 140lbs then maybe MP would be kind enough to oblige him. They could even do it here in Manila. It won’t be a PPV blockbuster but who knows, maybe they could spin something. Manny is now a superstar and people will pay to watch him fight.

  44. Deltorro
    Posted November 17, 2009 at 6:49 pm

marquez is the best choice money wise, manny could earn as much if not more than what he’l get fighting floyd (if floyd wont settle for a 50-50 atleast) Manny could bargain for as much as 70 – 30 in his favor against marquez, and dont say the people wont buy the fight coz he’s yet to beat marquez convincingly which I believe he will.. Pacquiao is an entirely different animal than when he last fought marquez. Even if the fight doesnt make as much money as it would fighting floyd, getting 70% of the whole lot would mean just the same for me..or even bigger.

Chuck, it’s not Pacfans who doubt Pacquiao. Whether we like it or not, Pac’s critics will always feast on Pac’s inability to score a decisive victory over Marquez in both outings, unless perhaps if he does that even this late in their careers. You are pointing out JMM’s disrespect and cheap publicity stunts as a reasons not to grant him with a 3rd fight as a form of punishment? Don’t you think PBF and the rest of his team equally deserve the same, or probably even more? It seems to me like another case of double standards.

I say let’s erase the biggest question mark in Pac’s career. JMM is easy money and PBF can wait, whereas JMM can’t.

Don, you probably want Manny to continue fighting to satisfy your own personal needs. There will always be unanswered questions for some people even after MP hangs up his gloves, but that’s their problem. I SAY Manny should get it over with Floyd and retire as a bigger legend than he already is. JMM himself isn’t interested in a 3rd fight anymore and is pursuing Hatton instead. Moneywise, that’s his best option. He knows that next time, he stays down when he goes down from Manny’s punches. Not exactly the kind of ending he’d want for his pride (spit). It’s NOT worth the money for such a one-sided event. Fans can be selfish sometimes, often expressing their own desires as if they know better than the boxers themselves. Manny takes the high road by doing things the way he sees fit for himself. Anyway, this discussion is just about moot since all roads are leading towards a showdown with PBF. Your argument of double standards doesn’t hold any water either, since PBF’s antics are mostly for show. Be that as it may, Floyd will soon get what he deserves…..On the other hand, JMM’s antics were real and (frankly) misguided. If I were Manny, I’d say “F**k JMM for doing that to me in front of our media and our people”. You may not be aware of what other opportunities JMM lost after he did that. I’m glad Manny did the right thing…keep JMM in the doghouse and let him fade away. That hurts him more than it hurts you, Don. Perhaps you may still get the 3rd fight you so desire, but it’ll be on Manny’s terms IF/WHEN he wants it…and it’s not for you to say. Look at most of the comments and other articles that have come out since yesterday. It goes against what you and the author are suggesting. They obviously know what’s right…..so screw the critics. They’re just whiners or rabid fanboys (or both), plain and simple. Most of them were too young to see lots of other great fighters in their prime. Yet, they try to sound like they know better. I see this all the time and laugh at them. I’m outta here!

  48. Posted November 18, 2009 at 1:56 am

I agree to others who said that a third bout with marquez is useless. You see what helped Pacquiao won against Cotto is his motivation to train hard to achieve something each of his fight even if he is multi tasking and doing other stuffs . If you observe that the last opponents of Pacquiao are getting bigger and better. They were risk but every win was something new to the already legendary resume of our ring hero. A bout against Mayweather would be definitely be a new challenge and a new motivation for Pacquiao to give Floyd his first loss and end the discussion of who’s the greatest fighter pound for pound today. Money,Fame and honor then comes after that.

Have you forgotten what happened to gorres and sisnorio? JMM will end up like one of them if he fights the version of pacquiao we have right now even at 140..marquez is a d*ckhead and one parasitic ingrate who had the marshmallow balls to tell the filipino people on national tv that he won the 2nd fight with MP. these kinds of classless boxers doesnt merit a 3rd fight with the world’s best P4P boxer and an all time great. MP-JMM III is a waste of f*cking time.. gayweather-pac is the bout i want to see..let marquez beat his drum and preach he won the bout twice..a win is a win..period..and that will go down in history books.

Marquez is Done….IMO…. the winner between Berto And Mosley will be a better match up and further cement pacquiao as a welter weight and add his weight ticket against mayweather…. although pac is now a natural 140 pounder… it will also give a lot of credit to him…against any welter weights…
i think september will be the best fight for Manny vs Money….
where manny will have least destruction and can rest well after his fight with cotto…and politics as well

i hope team pacquiao would hire JMM as a sparring partner/consultant for the mayweather fight. i think JMM can offer great insight on mayweather’s gameplan as well as point out manny’s flaws.. I think marquez knows pac’s weaknesses that’s why he has been so effective against him. marquez will be a good spar mate because he has excellent counter punching skills and defense, a smaller and slower version of floyd.

Your suggestion to go down to 142 lbs will be a big step backwards especially in light of the potential Mayweather fight at 147lbs within the same year. Such weight swings are never good to a boxer – ex. Roy Jones Jr.

It also does not add anything legacy-wise or financial-wise.

Correction Paisano, the second fight with Marquez was at Super-Featherweight for Marquez’s 130lbs belt which he won from Barrera. I would still like the two to fight again though, so we could finally move on and shut Marquez up for good.

  54. Posted November 18, 2009 at 4:34 pm

The fact is that Marquez has given Manny his toughest fights in recent time, and deserves a third shot at him. However, the overwhelming desire to see a match up between Manny and Mayweather is too much for even promoters to ignore.

Marquez does make alot of sense as an opponent – but when did sense and justice ever come into it?

    Good article and well written.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Pacquiao can’t take Mayweather lightly. If he wants to beat Money May, he’ll have to focus on his training 100%. Fighting JMM takes care of the question marks as well as an easier fight for Pac.
