On the last day of the games how did we do? A final assessment on today at the Olympic London games.

With three Gold medals and two Bronze won yesterday we go into the last day, It was China’s Yi Siling that won the first gold medal in this 2012 Olympics in the 10m air rifle now there’s just 15 gold’s left to be decided and I can say unashamedly “we want some of them,” it’s a nice easy start to the day, as the first event the men’s marathon starts at 11.00 am this morning and should finish around 12.35pm.

At 1.30pm the men’s boxing final’s takes place with Anthony Joshua for the GB team as our best hope in the super heavyweight class, but also fighting for the good old team GB will be the European welterweight champion Fred Evans he will be fighting for gold against Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan

The closing ceremony which promises to be another colourful spectacular is called “A Symphony of British Music” with stars including The Spice Girls, George Michael, the Pet Shop Boys, Jessie J, Sir Paul McCartney and many many more, it’s promised to be Fun and Humour involving all the participating athletes before London’s Mayor Boris Johnson hands over to the next hosts Rio de Janeiro.

So here we go the men’s marathon there are hundreds of people lining the route (it’s ten deep in places) and at the 10k mark it’s Wilson Kipsang of Kenya with his fellow countryman world champion Abel Kirui close behind in a pack of seven, at the halfway mark it’s still Wilson Kipsang but world champion Abel Kirui and Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda are on his shoulder just eight miles to go now, just less than a half hour to go  Wilson Kipsang and Abel Kirui and Uganda’s Stephen Kiprotich are all in contention Abel Kirui takes the lead it’s anyone’s race, 6 k to go it looked almost certain the two Kenyans Wilson Kipsang and Abel Kirui would get the gold and Silver but with a surprising spurt Uganda’s Stephen Kiprotich takes the lead from the world champion Abel Kirui, Stephen Kiprotich’s lead is extending all the time he’s running now holding his flag behind him he passes the finishing line in a time of 2:08:01 second  Abel Kirui & Wilson Kipsang Bronze both from Kenya.

Over to the boxing and will Anthony Joshua be the king of the ring? But first we have the fight for the welterweight championship Freddie Evens, round one of three minuet rounds and Freddie is quite content to let his opponent do most of the work and was that a mistake? As Freddie is behind, round two and Freddie will have to work now but Serik Sapiyev is five points in the lead into the third and final round Evens will have to pull out all his punches to win this one the bell goes to end the fight and the ref raises the hand of the winner Serik Sapiyev Freddie gets the silver

Now for the super heavyweight class, with the sounds of “we will, we will, rock ya” in the ring goes Roberto Cammarelle for Italy and for GB Anthony Joshua it’s three three minute rounds and with hopes high we go into round one for Britain’s last chance to get another gold, Our man has got to beat the reigning world Olympic champion to get the gold, round one, both boxers are sizing each other up. At the beginning of round two Cammarelle is one point in the lead, it’s a better round for Joshua beat he trails Cammarelle by three points, Joshua has to up the work rate to win this fight  it’s a spirited fight from Joshua it’s anyone’s fight its level points and the judges  appoint  the winner Anthony Joshua.

It’s not just the Olympians that are taking home the medals, we have news from Glasgow that the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band in front of a crowd of  35,000 people have won the World Pipe Band Championships it’s all happening isn’t it? Here’s how the medal table looks at the end of the games. And well done to ALL the contestants.

Johnny another great article and didn’t we do well not only in the sports and the medals but on how to put on a show. A job well done I only hope that the UK government will bring back sports to all schools like it was when I was a lad in the 50’s and 60’s.
    Best Wishes
    Steve
