Roach Says Cotto is Practically Training Himself
While Manny Pacquiao continues to scale new heights with his recent appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live talk show and gracing this weekend’s cover of Time Magazine, coach Freddie Roach continues to agitate the mental balance of Team Cotto by releasing new verbal bombs as the November 14 fight night nears.

As if on cue, just when world pound-for-pound boxer Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao appears to have tapered down on the physical aspect of his preparation for the upcoming November 14 mega-event of the year, coach Freddie Roach escalates his mental gambit against Puerto Rican bomber Miguel Cotto and his trainer Joe Santiago.
In an obvious attempt to once again rile up Cotto’s relatively inexperienced trainer Joe Santiago, Roach shares in an article by Fanhouse.com that Cotto has become slower, gets hit so much more, and sucks on defense ever since his loss to Antonio Margarito last year because he has been practically training himself.
A former boxer himself who trained under the legendary Eddie Futch, the 49-year old Roach says that a fighter always needs someone to correct him otherwise you will end up with fundamental mistakes because no one is there to point out your flaws. He believes that this is basically what is happening with Team Cotto where Miguel is the boss and pretty much calls the shots rather than his trainer who is handling only his second fight as head trainer after being promoted from his previous post as team nutritionist.
Roach further belittles the mitts sessions and sparring partners that Team Cotto has been utilizing in training, saying “it’s like [friggin] slow motion”. He says that it is difficult to judge the Pacman’s speed but when Pacquiao gets in front of Cotto he will feel like his sparring partners were like slow motion in comparison to the Filipino whirling dervish.
Reacting to a report that Joe Santiago wants him to bet his Trainer of the Year trophy if Pacquiao loses to Cotto on November 14th, Roach says, “the only reason he wants that trophy is because he’s never fought before, so he’s never even had a trophy. I’ve got [friggin] thousands of trophies. He can have that trophy, for Christ sakes. It’s not going to make him a better trainer”.
In a related article, pressed to react to Freddie Roach’s statements about him and his trainer, Miguel Cotto said, “forget about Freddie Roach. He can teach what he believes he can teach to help Manny win this fight, but at the end of the road, it’s just Manny and Miguel Cotto. No matter what Freddie Roach says, I have a very strong mind, you know? I’m not going to fall for his game.”
Meanwhile, while all of this was happening Manny Pacquiao’s star continues to shine which is indicative of the newfound crossover appeal of the Filipino boxing phenomenon as he made a guest appearanceat the popular Jimmy Kimmel Live late night talk show earlier this week and gracing this weekend’s cover of Time Magazine, the first boxer to be accorded such an honor after more than 20 years since Mike Tyson did it in 1988.

I just want to write some comment on those ring magazine blogs of Oscar dela hoya The man who surrender to pacquiao in front of thousand of attendants and a million of watcher around the globe , now he shouting t “I could’ve stood there and put my face in front of him (manny ) and he couldn’t have hurt me.” oscar said , wow what a stupid memory, why he didn’t say that pacquiao could’nt kill him becouse he surrender that night with his 2 hands and 2 feet
Das, you sound about as stupid as your posts reads.
However, I think Cotto’s trainer is in over his head.
If you are a boxer, would you surrender to your opponent if he could not hurt you and admit to the world that you are not really a warrior but a chicken?
Pac felt sorry for Dela Hoya and didnt want to hurt his idol!
i’ve read the blog of Oscar dela Hoya at ringtv.he said, pacquiao will never win the fight because cotto is much stronger and bigger.well, well, well…i think Oscar’s sucking his balls again.what if pacquiao will win?will he say because cotto is a shot fighter?a damaged fighter,so on and so forth, etc, etc, etc…a lot of excuses if they lost the fight…just exactly what happened to him when he was smashed by pacquiao and almost transformed his pretty face into unidentified allien.before his fight with manny,he said he was very strong and knock pacquiao out because he was so sharp and ready blah blah blah.but what happened after that fight?he cannot remember anything hahaha!!!good for those arrogant boxers who they think they are the best…yeah, they are the best in terms of being arrogant!!!
de la hoya is just bitter. because manny will overtake his 6 belts. when he said manny’s punches does not hurt, come on de la hoya, if you think manny can’t knock you out why did you threw the white towel on round 9? if your corner did not stop the fight im sure you got knock out.
Well that’s boxing.. you can make stupid comments… like Oscar did. But in the end they will be proven wronmg again.. then make excuses.. Oscar.. common man your retired now so enjoy it.
Don’t mind dela hoya he is just eyeing for cotto’s contract signing. Anyway cotto will retire after Nov 14. Pacman is very dangerous especially to those loud mouth fighter like cotto……. The vengeance of Evangelista cotto is fast approaching.
OSCAR DE HOYA THE QUITER. HEY OSCAR, HOW MANY TIMES YOU ARE PROVEN WRONG. YOU ARE STILL ON STATE OF DENIAL.
Agree with you guys, Why in the world did he surrendered if he was not hurt? Maybe some analyst were rigth in saying, “he did not surrender he was rescued”. Maybe yes, maybe NO.
I know he is trying lure cotto to be in his promotions.
BTW Oscar de la Hoya,
I never knew you were never been in TIME magazine front page.
For all those “achievement” and golden boy status of yours, you had never earned the world-wide respect of which i mistakenly thought you have.
say what, buy TIME magazine like what you did with ring magazine. lol
Like what I have posted in other articles in Pacland that I read….I want to read all the articles of the writers of this website whether or not it favors Cotto or Pacman as I have written 1 by 1 the names of those writers or columnist who say a thing or two on both fighters notably those who ruled out Pacman. Likewise I challenge also all bloggers to say their piece after the results of the fight and I am about to laugh right now on how alibis will be concocted.
The fight is indeed very exciting but the people’s comments are what I am waiting for.
By the way..I hope Oscar Dela Hoya read this…it’s true Pacquiao did not knock you out because if you review the tapes….it seems Pacman was holding his punches out of mercy to you. You see you were his idol so if i’m Pacman I wouldn’t want to humiliate my idol right in front of myself and millions who are watching and idolizes u as well. You did not go down but you “QUIT” right? Right before Pacman may knock you out between round 8 to round 12! Right? Your corner see it coming,it’s inevitable and they are concerned! Be thankful Pacman have mercy on you.Review the fight and you’ll see Pacman holds his punches.
Oscar de la Hoya is one of my favorite fighters from Mohd. Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Oscar and then Manny Pacquiao. I was really ashamed when HBO commentator Larry Merchant said ” THIS WAS EMBARRASSING ” because I have choosen Oscar to win the fight over my fellow countryman Manny Pacquaio… But nowadays I had to read everydays news about Manny. The show on the Jimmy Kimmel Live was a bit off for me because of his communication and English words and the song was just a song, but you’ve got to give him credit for that because he got balls to appear in that live show. And the TIME Magazine man….”THE GREAT HOPE”…damn…. win or loss Pacquiao is man wheither in or outside the ring.
And for Oscar he’s a great boxer but as a person he’s nothing just like Bob Arum said.
Here are some of the excuses & alibis Cotto and his team may come up with if he lost the fight against Pacman.
a) Jet lag from Puerto Rico to Florida
b) Didn’t eat enough kangaroo meat
c) Brutally destroyed by cheater Margarito
d) Chin was duct taped
e) Pacman on steroid
d) Can’t stand Pacman song on Kimmel live show
its getting to my nerve
e) More Mexicans are now on Pacman side
