Pacquiao Will Have to Catch Greased Lightning to Inflict First Loss of Mayweather’s Career
With his speed and slick defense unbeaten American welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. has run off 40 consecutive fights without a single defeat.
The hottest boxer on the planet and current pound-for-pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao wants to have the privilege of inflicting the first loss of Mayweather’s career when they tangle in a mega-fight slated for March 13th of next year, barring any last minute fumble from promoters of both sides.

Just in case you were living under a rock for the past year or so, pound-for-pound king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is looking like he’s invincible judging from his last four fights as he just romped through three weight divisions culminating with the impressive performance last month against Puerto Rican banger Miguel Cotto, which earned for Pacquiao the WBO welterweight belt.
Prior to that, Pacquiao also had other impressive performances along the way within the past year – he stopped by the lightweight division in June last year where he snatched the WBC lightweight belt from a game but overmatched David Diaz, then turned the dream into a nightmare for Oscar De La Hoya in December last year who quit after eight rounds in their fight which turned out to be a changing of the guards as boxing’s Golden Boy announced his retirement from the sport soon thereafter, and annexed the IBO and Ring Magazine light welterweight belt in May this year as he manhandled a surprisingly careless Ricky Hatton into a picture-perfect one-punch knockout with one second left in the second round.
Anti-Pacman Blueprint
It may seem like a distant memory now but it wasn’t too far back when Pacquiao was all too human. In his rematch against arch-nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez in March of last year, Pacquiao was stretched to the limit over 12 grueling rounds. If not for a flash knockdown he scored in the third round Pacquiao may not have escaped with the split-decision victory and collect the WBC super featherweight belt. The fight was too close to call that a decision either way would have generated the same amount of controversy.
In his first fight with Marquez that was contested at the featherweight class four years prior, Pacquiao and Marquez fought to a draw after 12 pulsating rounds despite the fact that Pacquiao put Marquez on the seat of his pants a total of three times in the first round. Marquez, a well-known master counter-puncher, used all of his grit and wit in timing and countering Pacquiao and salvage a draw after it seemed the fight was destined to end early when Pacquiao unleashed an explosive first round salvo.
What made Marquez so different that he was able to stretch Pacquiao into hair-splitting close fights when he was running roughshod over other fighters that dare to stand in his way? Styles make fights, and Marquez’ counter-punching strategy proved to be the most effective style to slow down or perhaps defeat a rampaging Pacquiao.
In Pacquiao’s only loss after hooking up with respected trainer Freddie Roach, Erik Morales also counter-punched his way into a close but unanimous decision victory over the Pacman in their super featherweight encounter in March 2005. Pacquiao however quickly made adjustments after that and avenged his loss twice over by knocking out Morales in January and November of the following year to claim bragging rights in their trilogy.

Greased Lightning
Hence, with the close fights against Marquez and the lone loss against Morales standing as exhibits, Pacquiao is clearly most vulnerable to a foe with counter-punching capabilities in his arsenal.
When Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) tangles with unbeaten American welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KOs) on March 13 next year, he will be facing the very best in the counter-punching department. On top of that Mayweather also owns one of the fastest if not the fastest hands and feet in the sport to the point that he even gets, fairly or unfairly, labeled as a runner. His defense is also tops in the sport highlighted by that vaunted shoulder-roll trick of his. Judging by the numbers, ‘Money’ doesn’t look like a slouch in the KO department as well as he managed to knockout 25 of his 40 opponents which translate to a respectable 63% KO rate.
With his speed, slick defense and counter-punching abilities Floyd Mayweather Jr. is greased lightning personified on top of the ring. And Manny Pacquiao will have to catch greased lightning if he hopes to inflict damage and register the first loss of Mayweather’s career.
Lightning Arrester
Mayweather may be the most difficult opponent that Pacquiao will ever face in his storied career. Yet the man is undaunted as he and trainer Freddie Roach have built a reputation of proving naysayers wrong time and time again. Together, the impressive duo has collaborated for an impressive 18-1-2 against top tier competition over the past eight years.
One thing’s for sure though, today’s version of Pacquiao is no longer the same one who faced Marquez and Morales in the same manner that Floyd Mayweather Jr. may no longer be the same fighter of fights past. The intriguing question that will surely make us tune in to the fight when it unfolds is: which current version is better than the other?
If their confidence are any indication it seems that the dynamic duo of Pacquiao and Roach may have already figured out what to use in trying to catch greased lightning and it’s not steroids as persistently bandied about by Mayweather and his camp. As they have done so many times in the past, the duo will call on their good old fashioned battle-tested formula – wily veteran coach Roach crafts the perfect game plan, Pacquiao punishes himself in training and implements the game plan to a “T”, and with profound faith come into the fight knowing that God will do the rest.

The very same worries have been disturbing me ever since the ” The Fight” was floated. But I guess the shoulder roll defense of Mayweather won’t work out effectively against the southpaw and lefty stance of Pacquiao.Maywaether is so massive of an opponent, but the fight is winnable. Very nice article, bai.
Nice Article…
This is a fight to watch out for
Critics keep pointing to Pacquiaos 2 matches against Marquez as a vulnerability. don’t know how close they follow his matches after those two fights but Manny is an entirely different fighter now than he was then. He has improved amazingly with each match after that. His opponents after Marquez have studied those 2 fights and went as far as hiring the same trainer with no success. Given that Floyd is a much more advanced counter puncher than Marquez is and Pacquiao has not faced a fighter like Floyd yet, Floyd also has not faced a fighter anything close to what Pacquiao is and will be on March 13th given that he still improves after his beat down of Cotto which will most likely be the case with Freddie Roach applying an entirely different game plan.
Mayweather has difficulties with aggressive/attacking fighters. He makes adjustments as fight goes on, but da Pacquiao puzzle of an unorthodox southpaw speedster who can quickly establish a rhythm is just as significant challenge to Mayweather as he is to Pacquiao. I watched JC Chavez v. R. Mayweather 1 & 2 and saw similarities with Pac/Floyd and to what could be a blueprint to Pacquiao’s success to beating Mayweather.
Mayweather is labelled a runner because he doesn’t engage in direct combat and NOT because of his fast feet. Just compare Floyd and Manny, they both have fast feet (I wont go into who’s faster) but did anyone label Manny as a runner? Hell NO. Why? because Pacman gets inside the ring to fight (when I say fight, I mean exchanging punches while trying to avoid getting hit). Mayweather gets inside the ring to win. There’s the difference. Floyd does not fight, or at least not anymore. Now, tell me, if that is not a runner then what is?
Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3 would be a better fight. Not a better draw but a much better fight. Why? Because Marquez has a warrior’s heart. Floyd doesn’t. That’s alone proves why JMM is better than Floyd. A record of 40-0 doesn’t mean anything if the Quality of the opposition is shalow. Floyd has 25 KO but who’re those boxers? Were they any good? Onyok Velasco can KO 100 Tricycle drivers in a day. Floyd is just full of BS. Both Sr. and Jr.
All I can say is that an immovable object needs an unstoppable force, that’s floyd and manny respectively. Floyd’s defense and counter punching may be absolute but a warrior like Manny will engage him non-stop ’til floyd drops his defense. Manny’s iron jaw and chin have been tested with his fight vs Cotto. A 1-2 counter punch of Floyd will be no match for Manny’s 5-6 punch typhoon. Offense will win this fight, not defense.
Marquez did not hurt Pacquiao at all when they collided twice. Needless to say, the latter inflicted the better punches and resulted to the former’s kissing the canvass four times. Not to mention too that when they fought, Pacquiao was still a raw talent then. However, those fights with Maquez and Morales were vital in moulding Pacquiao from a one dimensional fighter into what he is now. On the other hand, Mayweather looks pretty good only when he knows he can handle his opponent. He is aware as well as his father that Pacquiao is a different fighter and they are now having sleepless nights leading to the fight.
floyd jr. is no match for manny. the roll over shoulder that he usually does against his opponents will not work on manny. manny is going to dislocate his shoulder just like what happened to cotto. floyd jr. never faced anybody as good as manny. just like santiago said, they underestimate his punches and speed. so floyd better watch-out coz his time is about to come. i don\’t even think that the fight will last longer. it would be a quick one coz manny has so much hatred towards floyd jr. and sr. for accusing him of taking substance. so to those who still doubt manny, don\’t be surprise when manny beats floyd.,
The shoulder roll defense will not prove effective against a southpaw. Zab proved that by outworking and even knocking down Mayweather UNTIL he got tired and lost his game.
Mayweather’s style is fit for a southpaw. Like what Roach said, if Manny can’t hit his face he will surely batter his body as it’s all open for Pac’s left hook.
To say that Pac-Marquez is the blueprint to beating Pac is ignorance. Pac never had that right hand YET. Pac was still growing hence hadn’t develop his full boxing weight and power. 147 I think is his best division so I hope Mayweather gets a new running shoes because that’s all he’s doing when he feels the power of Pac’s left and right.
Yebah!
Manny is a better and very strong fighter today than when he fought Morales and Marquez whereas Floyd was a better defensive fighter with very good hard counters before than today. There’s no way he can win a fight against Manny in a million years. Expect another rib injury from him while training and re schedule the fight right after the election in the Philippines, he has all the chances of winning this fight if he can do that because Manny will be so much affected by the long period of vigils during campaign. That if Manny still wants to fight him.
How could Pacquiao catch Greased Lightning Mayweather… Well , Arum and Shaffer have to put a leash to Mayweathers neck coz, he’s starting to make excuses, giving a hint that he’s trying to run away for this March 13 fight!
Greased Lightning Mayweather? He finally found his match!
ANTI GREASED LIGHTNING…
THE TRUE P4P… MANNY PACQUAIO !!!
The shoulder of Gayweather will be the first target of pacman to reach his pretty assuming face. After the bout, we’ll pity a fractured shoulder and face of the Gay.
Great offense beats great defense. And that is proven already in all sports!!!
You’ll See…..but now SINAW..
Merry Xmas To All…
mayweather will ko by pacman in later rounds. Mark my word, devastating knockout assured 100 percent
You may it sound impossible to catch Mayweather when in fact, Zab, Hatton, Corley and a lot more have done exactly that. Except Pacman has way better work rate than all of them.
Floyd will not show up, he is very, very scared.
i read, heard diff. and same insights and opinions from diff.individual on manny’s fast fights, most of them negatives but pacman proved them wronged, is this the fight should i doubt manny’s ability in the ring? no! manny fought diff. style and strategies on his diff. type and style opponent, and i know freddie knows best.
pacman will eat jr alive comes march 13! i tell you!
if mayweather is a greased Lightning, then pacquiao must be the industrial-strength degreaser that he is so worried about because it
appears like he’s now trying to find a quick escape out of harm’s way by putting road blocks to the proposed match.
if the fight doesn’t happen it will only prove to the boxing world what
most fans have been saying all along-that mayweather is petrified
at the thought of fighting the man they call The Storm Across the Pacific
mayweather was heavier than marquez when they fought. i believe they agred to fight at mayweathers division so it is clear that it is to mayweathers advantage. marquez doesnt handle the wieght well, he knows that, but he is only after for the big money. even floyd is already in his comfort zone, he really make sure that he will win that fight by chosing to be 2 lbs overwieght. if you have a good mind you will not bet against floyd because it is already clear who will win. one thing is, floyd didnt stop marquez and they went to scorecards.. why? of all that great advantage? why? i tell you, if manny was on mayweathers shoes that time, surely, marquez will not hear the sound of the bell for the third round.
idiots! the pacman is not human anymore…. one of its kind, there will be no space for gayweather to run, thats the blueprint how to beat the gayweather…they will make the ring as a size of a matchbox….thanx to fredie…
to much talking floyd will be illiminate by pacman.ha! ha!
I’m a biased Manny Pacquiao fan but I have to agree with Freddie and this article. Very, very well written! This will be no easy fight for Manny because Floyd Jr. is too slick and too defensive for Manny. Though I believe Manny will win –and deep down I hope it’s by a humiliating KO in the early rounds, Freddie is probably right that Manny will win via UD. As Manny grows into his full potential, so too has his opponents. From Morales, to Marquez, to Mayweather –the list of masters of counter-punching looks to be getting better and better. The trend will prove no different March 13th. It will be a 12 round battle.
The punching stats will be too much for Pac, as every boxing fan knows. Now, if KO didn’t happen either way definitely it will be UD for Pac. If Floyd will be losing by huge margin on the last quarter of the fight, then you can expect he will be forced to engage and this will be his dreamland.
Time and time again the midget (label used by Mayweathers against Pac) will defy the sweet science.
