Pacquiao-Cotto: Let’s Keep It Real

“This is a very important bout. This gives Cotto the chance to rise several notches towards the ranks of superstardom. On Pacquiao’s part, this fight will most certainly eradicate all remaining doubts about his greatness”.

Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol – Come November 14th, the annals of boxing will turn one of the most important pages of its glorious history. Filipino pride and arguably boxing’s most valuable commodity Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) will try to become the first person to win an unprecedented 7th world title in as many weight divisions. Puerto Rico’s very own Miguel Angel “Junito” Cotto (34-1-0, 27 KOs) hopes to prevent that from happening, retain his WBO welterweight title and erase the stigma of his devastating, yet controversial loss to former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito.  Here, we are going to dissect quite a bit and make objective predictions upon how will history unfold at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

But before I say my piece, let’s first try to examine what the others had to say about this epic encounter. In spite of his recent masterful ring exploits, beating Oscar De La Hoya to a pulp and almost killing Ricky Hatton, many of Pacquiao’s skeptics still remain, well… skeptic about his chances against Cotto. Citing size and strength difference, as well as the fact that Cotto has been campaigning in the heavier weight class, and thus, already very well accustomed to taking heavier, more powerful punches than those of anyone Pacquiao has ever faced, they believe that Cotto will simply be too much for Pacquiao. A boxing scribe even bragged that “Cotto can take a punch,” but ironically followed it up by saying “he proved that against Margarito.” I’m not sure what he really meant about taking a punch. Does getting knocked out count, too? Perhaps it does, based on his definition.

Image via Wikipedia

There might be a size difference, but I have serious doubts that the Pacquiao-Cotto faceoff will end up the way Mayweather-Marquez did. The Pinoy and the Puerto Rican share the same reach and Cotto is just about an inch taller than Pacquiao. Furthermore, contrary to what the cynics believe or would lead us to believe, Pacquiao, for his part, has also been taking punches from much heavier fighters, even natural middleweights at that, especially recently when he started campaigning in the heavier weight divisions. Shouldn’t we consider sparring partners as gauge for Pacquiao’s ability to take a punch as well? Let’s not forget that a boxer logs over 10 times more rounds in sparring than during the actual fight. Need I say more?

Cotto’s defense is great, but come fight night, Pacquiao’s offense could prove to be so much better. Yes, Cotto can take a punch… but can he take large volumes of punches? Incessant droplets of water can break a rock over a period of time. Cotto is no different and Pacquiao’s punches will certainly not be akin to mere droplets of water… they will definitely inflict pain.

Well, we can’t really blame the skeptics for their continued doubts. Pacquiao is simply a freak of nature. He is one in a million… may even be one in a billion. He isn’t ordinary. Therefore, we can’t expect just ordinary things from him. I am, however, neither downplaying Cotto’s chances, nor his abilities. Cotto is a great fighter and he will go into the fight being the younger combatant, turning 29 on the 29th of this month. But unfortunately for him, 16 days after his birthday, Manny Pacquiao will give him a belated birthday present that he and his fans will not like at all. The skeptics, as expected, will once again find excuses, as blood oozes out of Cotto’s deformed and lumpy face. The Pinoy idol will continue to exceed expectations, all the while disappointing and upsetting his critics. Pacquiao wins by TKO in 8!

Oh by the way, I haven’t said anything about speed, have I?

Just for fun, I enjoin my beloved readers to post their own predictions below. Comments are also highly appreciated. You can write them below or send them to reylanloberternos@yahoo.com.ph

Eddie doesn\’t know what he\’s talking about. It\’s the other way around. Pacquiao will knock out Cotto in 9 rounds. Cotto has never faced anyone with the lateral movement/speed as Manny. Cotto better be ready for the fight of his life.

Excitement is growing in me day to day as I read every write up about this upcoming match. Sometimes I’d be skeptical but then I’d remind myself as to why I’ve always rooted for the guy. He is a phenomenon in boxing. And if he says he could beat Cotto, then I believe he could beat Cotto.

Ohhh well, another prediction…against Cotzilla, come the 14th will be another wrong expert to analize the fight in a one way visor, but I respect that , because you persiving or visualize something that is irrevelant to this fight,… and I said expert because the media are fully responsible for the new batch of boxing fan going from bad to worst about knowledge of the basic boxing 101….once again just we have to wait until the 14th to see the so call expert to point out what went wrong, and how they can do better the next time,….that’s if they still have the job.

With all the lychees (linta) hangers on (sabit/amuyong) around Pacquiao, staying late at night & not train very hard because of so many distractions, there is no doubt in my mind Pacquiao will lose to Cotto by KO on the between 3rd & 5th round.

men, i love the way you break things down. Manny is a good fighter but he seems to evolve of being ungrateful – egocentric -selfish baby. Manny does all his dirty art work with the help of his new buddy KONZ.. :(

  11. Posted October 27, 2009 at 2:03 pm

THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES. Why can’t you understand it. Cotto dismissed el gato for showboating in sparring. That means he’s playing with Cotto and Cotto cannot do much until frustration sets in. On the other hand, Roach did not appreciate Pacquiao showboating to Shawn Porter on the last training day in Manila.Porter was’nt even close to knocking him down. What does that tell you? Chilling to the bones. Don’t you agree?

  12. Posted October 27, 2009 at 2:18 pm

    TO: TITO

i agree with you, just look back at those write ups from writers/losers who were against PACMAN “before” he fights DDD, RH, ODLH…..yup..thats right….they all kiss the canvass….lucky for them, its just 1 fight of incorrect prediction, they still got their job and theyre all still writing i guess….in classified ads section selling stuff :)

If, at the beginning of the fight, Pacquiao finds out that he can take Cotto’s power punches, it’s game over for Cotto. Manny will unleash his awesome offense with no fear at all. The fight might be over in 5. Blinding speed combined with destructive power will prove to be too much for the Boricua fighter.

Eddie you are no pacquiao fan. Cotto is too slow, has no trainer, has been getting worse since he lost his hair. Only won the WBO Welterweight fighting a bum who’s not even a champion. Fought a declining Zab Judah. Cuts easily and quits easily!!! In Contrast Pac has never quit. Has fought more elite fighters, champions in the last 10 years!! Nothing but the best competitions. Also has been improving alot that he is totally dominant in his last 3 fights. You think just an average champion will beat Pac. Cotto is worn out & broken down fighter already. Like Freddy Roach said Pac will put so much pressure that Cotto wont recover and will be pummeled, cut and worn down by the 9th round. Pac will cut him up so bad they will stop the fight!!!

Great analysis, and a very good style. Your writing skill could rival Pacman’s boxing skill. You may put it to better use on some other topic.

If I may suggest, developmental economics, political or social commentaries would is well suited for this style.

  23. Posted October 27, 2009 at 4:51 pm

There are two important questions that will be known come fight night!
    1. Can Cotto handles Pacquiao speed as what we saw against Mosley? If yes then its a long night for Pacquiao. If no then its bye bye for Cotto.
2.Can Pacquiao handles Cotto\’s power punches? If yes then Pacquiao dont have problem outboxing Cotto all night, If no then Pacquiao is in danger of getting KOed.

Very interesting match up, better than ODLH and Hatton!

  24. Posted October 27, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Of course Cotto can take volumes of punches no one in the game throws more punches than Tony Margarito……..Pacquiaos only advantage will be his footwork…….Speed has never been a factor for Miguel Cotto……I predict a Cotto victory in round 10

  25. Posted October 27, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Like what I have been saying in forums and in my bloggings, Manny Pacquiao has the ability to adjust and be flexible in all of his opponent’s fighting style. Manny Pacquiao overcomes his disadvantages and making full use of his advantages. I always likened Manny Pacquiao as the Bruce Lee of today’s generation. What Manny does is being an indirect follower of Bruce Lee’s philosopy. Skeptics of Manny are obviously ignorant of the way of the intercepting fists or the general term known as Jeet Kune Do

    Posted October 27, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Well, those realities won’t sink in a bit to those Pacquiao’s detractors.
Now some are blaming the media just to discredit what was achieved and already recorded in boxing history.Six titles in different weight classes and now eyeing the seventh, still perceive as not true is dellusional.Cotto is beatable, and nothing out of the ordinary is highlighted on his boxing achievements.
In the contrary,Pacquiao’s report card is full of A’s.He is now
bordering the legendary to a miracle. However a person’s personal view doesn’t reflect it all,but how many individual do believe that miracle do happen?that should explains the skepticism.

Great write-up man…. Cotto can take a punch, who can’t? He is a boxer isn’t he? Speed kills and he won’t be able to cover himself up when Pacman throws punches in bunches….My prediction PACMAN in 6 rounds.

    GO PACMAN.

I think i’m the only one who would say this. You asked about Pacquiao’s speed? And here’s i can say about it. Manny Pacquiao is the only boxer in history that has this ablility, i’m not only talking about speed, a lot of boxers have this. His boxing style is very different among all of them. Just like Oscar Dela Hoya said, style makes the fight. The Pacman is the only boxer in this world that has this ability and the ability i’m talking about is the speed of his FEET. I mean you’re feet bring your whole body wherever they go,right, but Pacquiao has an extreme amount of speed on his feet among others. I mean, Ali has his amazing footwork but not as good as Manny. Manny’s feet are like a ball…that bounces. And Manny’s style of boxing is bouncing on and off looking for the perfect leverage and take his timed power punch.

Manny Pacquiao will lose this fight because he is not mentally focused. He is more focused on his upcoming political election next year, who his next opponent will be and what songs to sing in his after-fight party in Las Vegas. In his mind he already won the fight. That is the wrong mentality for any fight. He says he is taking this fight seriously but his actions speak louder than words. This guy needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Maybe losing by knockout will help wake him up. Good for Manny if he loses. He deserves it.

Nice piece of work. The PacMan had already figured out how to send Cotto to the canvas KOed. It was when him and Arum watcthed Cotto/Clottrys fight in New York. All the PacMann has to do was to be in top shape. And he is now.
The only thing I don\\\’t agree with you is that it won\\\’t last 8 rounds. Its between 1 and 5 rounds for Cottos\\\’ demised.
Go Manny……get him! and good luck!

    Pacman knows!
Pacquiao speed and power will cripple Cotto.
Cotto is tough as nails so it may take 11th round KO for Pacquiao.
Cotto must bring a lot of gas to make it tough for Pacquiao.

Uncle Bod will soon retires, he really likes the business but his age will soon tells him he must retire. For this, he wants one of his fighter make history and only Manny has a potential to make it on Nov 14. If Cotto wins this fight, it will just comes back to old times and the recognition will soon forgotten. For Cotto’s part, winning the fight against the P4P king Manny will surely boost his career but that’s a huge gamble since Manny is showing willingness to die for it. I hate to say this as I’m sure Cotto fans and all boxing fanatics will not like it, I don’t like it to happen either ( I just want to express my childish idea, no need to get back at me ) If I were Cotto, I can double my Money on that date by showing my chin to Manny and take a knee or stuff like that, I can be a very good actor. I won’t gamble with unfair odds 2 to 1. I’m not a gambler anyway. Give that recognition to Manny, he deserves it after all.

This fight will not reach the 9th round. You bet. Pacquiao has to KO cotton within the first three rounds, if not, Cotto will KO Pacman within the 4th to 6th round. If both will go beyond 6 rounds, its a TKO by Cotto over Pacman.

  56. Posted October 27, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Manny has completed dominance from 106 lbs to 147 lbs when he demolished Oscar. For formality, Cotto’s belt is a must. But Cotto is likely to put everything he can to upset everyone hoping for it. He doesn’t want Manny to use his belt to formalize his kingship. He has plans for himself. To prove everyone that he is Miguel Angel Cotto, one of the finest Puerto Rican warrior of this era. The money involves here is pretty darn good but this fight is more than the value of money, its all about pride. You have to kill me first in Cotto’s mind, and Manny, I will do everything necessary to take your belt. That’s a very good stuff to put at the wild card gym, I need that before I retire, before Bod retires. Before the eyes of everyone, I really need that belt.

I think the size and weight difference is not the factor of winning the fight, they both have the same reach, and cotto is taller just less then an inch, if Paquiao had grown up in the same way of Cotto sorroundings, maybe Manny started boxing at 130 lbs, but he is a thin boxer, had to work hard to find something to feed for himself and his family. And the good thing is that he develop his pure muscle naturally asHe gained wieght with out removing any fat at all., so maybe Cotto is heavier at fight night, but all that added wieght doesn’t add more power to his punches., so for me basically the same, only that Manny has more power on his punches. I don’t think Cotto punches are more powerful than Manny, If Margarito hit by Manny same as Cotto hit him, I don’t think Margarito can still win that fight with Cotto. Manny by TKO…

Manny is Superman and Batman in the movie he just finished. However, in real life he will continue to be Superman/Batman because he will knock out Cotto out. You are right. Manny is one in a billion and he will continue to exceed expectation.

We would like to see him fight Mayweather and knock him out too as Ariza pointed out. Another two fights and he can retire for good. But will somebody tell Manny that he can go into politics for the next 100 years of his life, but please just leave one year in boxing so that we can see him fight more?

Pacquiao in 5 rounds! Cotto will be lucky if he can survive til 5 rounds. My prediction no longer than 7 rounds!

My analysis Cotto is strong, but Pacquiao is stronger,
Cotto is not so fast, but Pacquiao is the fastest fighter in the planet, A single punch of Pacquiao will knock Cotto. If Cotto and his camp thinks they can handle it, how about Mannny’s barrage of punches?
Actually my real prediction is less than 5 rounds. I’m just saying less than seven to be safe. But I really believe that Cotto will kiss the canvas in early rounds!

Cotto trains for 2 hours while pacquiao trains for 4 to 5 hours..lol…
come nov 14th,2009 will be cotto’s death…he shall rest in peace

Pacman’s footwork and speed will be the key factor for Cotto’s defeat.

I am not a boxing expert, but I know the difference between which is fast and which is slow.

I watched Cottos fights, he is slow. I watched Pacmans fights, he slips and ducks punches. In other words, you can hardly hit and hurt him. Cotto is bigger, which means, an easy target!

Look at the previous fights stats of Pacmans power punches, it ranges between 50-70% !! He does not missed!

So we now know how each of the 2 guys will win. Cotto by KO, Pacman by KO or decision. I would’nt compare the punches from sparring with the punches from the fight itself. In sparring, the fighters wear headgears, and probably the gloves are not the same as the one used in the real fight. Cotto can take punches. I wonder how Pacquiao would take Clottey’s punches, that of course, is another topic. I’m just saying Cotto is tough as far as his chin is concerned. Pac’s chin is also good as seen in his fights, but he hasn’t faced someone with Cotto’s power. Question is, can Cotto land a big punch? I doubt it but I am not discounting a possibility. I am picking Pacquiao to win this one because of his speed/power.

Friends in a boxing world there are so many peoples saying I am a great boxer of all the time. Which I really believed that Manny has his owned greatiest talent in a boxing history to become seventh division sooner. I predicted that Manny will do to TKO Cotto in 10 rounds I’m very sure on that that because Cotto has it’s strong fighter also and big & tall a little than Manny. But I believed Manny can do & on the early round Manny is measuring the power of Cotto. Then in second round Manny will change his style to counter Cotto movement. When Manny notice that Cotto well got hurt that’s the time Manny will move on his plan to TKO. 3rd round Cotto will be little bit hurt, 4rth round Cotto start cutting his left eyes, 5 round cotto will closely tired, 6 round cotto will save the bill, 7 round cotto will seriously big probelms his cut then doctor get attention, will Cotto continue the fight in 8 round, then in 9 round Cotto will be come bloody face and weak until the round end. And finally in 10 round just cunsume 2: 25 second Cotto will be KO that’s the end of the fight. See you on Nov 14 my prediction bye bye telax.

I have been following Pacquiao’s boxing exploits, and I can tell you, Pacman has evovled from the slugger- type boxer then to a masterful tactician of what he is now. all this transformations must be credited to the hard work than by Freddie roach. come fight time, Pacman victory will depend on how Roach has prepared the fight plan. But i’ll bet Pacman will prevail via TKO on the early rounds.

Pacman lost twice against morales and marquez and still they gave him the wins… He coould never beat oscar at his fighting weight. He beat a drained delahoya. Everybody knows that…Stop the catch weights .. Good fighter yes.. great no way

Haha. Wow!! It’s amzing to see how many of u pacman %^#* riders or on here. I bet most of u aren’t even real boxing fans! Yea manny is an exciting fighter he is a good fighter I take nothing away from him. But manny has never faced some1 like cotto. A TRUE welter! He hasn’t been hit by some1 who punches as hard as cotto. IMO I don’t belive he can even hurt cotto. Cotto will use hos jab, cut off the ring so he can trap manny and wen he’s trapped he is going to beat mannys body up. Cottos jab will be the reason manny loses. Ps PAC loss to Marquez.!

I’m a Filipino and I go to the Filipino fighter. The only thing Manny will lose to Cotto if He doesn’t make him seriously. Focus is the best weapon in Paquiao’s victory. But i think He’s not that intensely focus with his fight to Cotto with all those distractions and plans especially this coming 2010 election. Unlike previous fights against famous boxers, Manny had a strong determination and the intensity was with him. I”m not Nostradamus who predicts future because He himself got mistakes with his predictions to the END OF THE WORLD.

anyway…let’s just see the fight and stop this trash talking…

    and when the bell rings..Hold on.hold tight…coz someone’s gonna fall…either them both..__________

see me in ALPHA COMPANY 5th PRMG>>>samahan ng mga madudunong sa VIGA, CATANDUANES..wag lang mag brown- out kundi tabla lahat sa pustahan.we know its BIG BUSINESS MEN…pera lng naman nilalaro nila…alam na nyan kung sinu mananalo sa negotiation pa lang ng both paries….we are all freaks…Niloloko lang tayo nila..hahaha!!!Go Freaks!!!si PAquiao wala ng maTITIRIS NA kutO KAY cOTTO DAHIL KALBO NA UN..MAG CHACHA NA LNG CILA NI aLING dioniSIA..HAHAHA
