Granted Manny Pacquiao is now considered the best fighter on the planet and deservedly so. One thing that is sometimes overlooked in his recent string of victories has been the ability of his trainer Freddie Roach to review fights of opponents and find trends and patterns in their styles. In the case of Ricky Hatton, Oscar DeLaHoya and finally Miguel Cotto his premise has held true. It will not be the case with Floyd Mayweather Jr. who has the ability to change styles, stances and also does not deliver his punches in any predictable manner. In addition he has the punching power and patience to not be influenced by the wishes of the crowd or media hype.
In Mayweathers corner is a brain trust of ex fighters in his uncle Roger and his father Floyd Sr. who’s past sometimes relationship with his son has not seemed to interfere with their professional relationship. Each one plus the remaining parts of the Mayweather camp plus the desire of Floyd Jr make for a formidable package. Miguel Cotto cannot be used as a milestone to predict the outcome of the Pacquiao Mayweather mega fight. Cotto had a pattern of retreat which was often disguised as counter punching but backing up along the ropes negated his power and everyone with knowledge in the sport was aware that it spelled doom for him in his bout with Pacquiao. Mayweather has shown an ability to turn a dull fight into a knockout because of his defensive skills and the element of surprise. He is rarely hurt because he disdains mixing it up for the glory of a fast knockout. That is what makes him special. He could have knocked out Ricky Hatton earlier but took his time and when that fight is used as a comparison that Pacquiao did it sooner the betting public should not be fooled.
If Mayweather fights his usual defensive counter punching style he will win a decision that will be disputed by the sheer nature of the fact that throughout his career his classification as a boxer puncher has led to sometimes boring fights. If he decides to surprise Pacquiao and make it a Hagler Hearns war then Mayweather will win by knockout. Pacquiao has been fighting many great fighters but this will be a case of a great big man against a great little man. Either way the public will see a great fight between the two most skillful and blessed fighters of our time.
