Emmanuel D. Paquaio is a 30 years old boxer from General Santos City, Philippines; a place where about a third of the population are in poverty. He was a stowaway poor guy who sells goodies in the streets for a living until he started a new hobby in boxing.

He started his boxing career at the age of 16 forging his age and weight just to get in. He is a natural talent and even enhanced when he became an professional boxer at the age of 19. He was not popular then but at year 2003 when he fought against Antionio Barera and started winning against big names, Pacman became the number 1 idol of the Filipinos and slowly gaining reputation internationally.

Since then the locals celebrate his every winnings and successes including his commercial shows, his music albums, his movies and products he endorse. One thing that is so adorable about him, he’s still humble and enthusiastic. Every time he has fights, the entire country stops and are glued in their homes to watch the fight and people have their all out support and prayers for Manny. A lot of Filipinos pray and over novena for Manny before his fights and this made Manny became one of the celebrated people in the Philippine history. When he fights usually in HBO, zero crime, no traffic, the war in the southernmost part of the country is on ceased fire. He’s the only Filipino and only Asian boxer who made it to the top.

Since he started getting good publicity and money, he gives a portion of it to the poor and the president of the country gives him a hero’s parade. He is never greedy about his wealth but he also has constant threats of kidnappings that is why he has his little army in his hometown. So far, there are no incidences reported.

A lot of politicians are trying to catch him to be their endorser. Why not, he’s the most popular person in the country next to the president. He run in the last election and lost. His opponent and also a friend, advised him to be away of politics because that will only affect his performance; indeed he followed her advise. God has a purpose for Manny for not joining the politics.

On December 6, 2008 was the most memorable day for Manny’s camp and for his country too after he defeated in an 8 round TKO one of the legend in the boxing world – Oscar de la Hoya. This was not a titled belt game but he gained so much popularity and reputation in the world. He is also known as the “Mexican – Executioner” since most of those boxing champs he defeated are from Mexico like Eric Morales, Manuel Marquez, David Diaz, Antonio Barerra and more.

On May 2009, he’s to face the British pride Hatton in a titled belt for the 140 lbs division. Whatever is the result, for sure the people’s champ will always be the number 1 idol for all the Filipinos.
