“hot” Topic Pacquiao-cotto: 60% of Boxing Personalities Favor Pacman

Boxing circles are talking about the upcoming Pacquiao-Cotto mega-event on November 14th with some respected boxing personalities going out on a limb to publicly declare their prediction for the upcoming fight. Let’s find out who favors who and why.

With the much anticipated megafight between Filipino dynamo Manny Pacquiao and Puerto Rican slugger Miguel Cotto rapidly approaching, talk about the fight is hot topic in boxing circles from all over.

With various writers, trainers, promoters, as well as fighters themselves coming out with their own predictions ever since the fight was officially announced in late July, we thought it would be interesting to scour the internet and compile what each of them have to say and come up with an informal poll for this much-anticipated fight.

Of course, team members from each camp are excluded from this compilation even though both sides have been actively coming out in public claiming how their fighter will destroy the other come fight night.

Pardon the transcription but for some reason the online editor won’t let me publish the sources’ quotes as they are hence I’m forced to improvise and just keep the essence of what each is saying here. You may still go to the actual quotes however via the provided links to the source articles should you wish to.

So here we go:

Nacho Beristain (famed Mexican trainer of the Marquez brothers Juan Manuel and Rafael, Oscar De La Hoya, among others) – says that the key to this fight is not only Pacquiao’s speed but also because of the fact that he is now a better technical fighter while still retaining his speed and power. He also doesn’t think that Cotto has already recovered from the beating he suffered at the hands of Margarito. He thinks Pacquiao will win this fight.

Jorge Perez (writer, El Nuevo Dia) – believes that Cotto is bigger and punches harder than anybody Pacquiao has ever faced.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (undefeated Welterweight & former pound-for-pound king) – thinks that Cotto is no longer the same after the Margarito fight. Although one can never say what can happen in the sport of boxing but if he had to lean toward one in this fight he’d have to say Pacquiao, partly because he’s a quick starter.

Manuel Perez (writer, Boxingnews24.com) – says that Cotto is going to make Pacquiao suffer and will let him stick around for the full 12 rounds just to toy with him and show him who the master is.

Fernando Vargas (former Light Middleweight champion) – says that Pacquiao is the man to beat right now because he’s been beating top-notch fighters. He believes that Cotto will not be able to deal with the best pound-for-pound fighter in the game.

Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho (former Junior Lightweight champion) – thinks that Cotto will hit and hurt Manny. Although he’s not sure of a KO but he believes that Cotto is simply too strong for Manny.

Miguel Hernandez (former middleweight fighter) – picks Pacquiao because he thinks his good friend David Diaz gave Manny a better fight than De La Hoya and Hatton and yet the result was still devastating despite the fact that it was fought at the lighter 135 pounds.

Sam Colonna (boxing trainer) – says that something is not the same with Cotto after the loss to Margarito. That fight seemed to have taken a lot out of him, hence he feels Pacquiao will win this one.

Eric Bonilla (former Welterweight fighter) - says that Pacquiao is gonna be hit hard by Cotto. He thinks Cotto will win on points after 12 rounds.

Marv Dumon (writer, Examiner.com Houston) – believes that Pacquiao will win by an impressive TKO stoppage in the 6th round over the soon-to-be former Welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

Richard Bailey (writer, Boxingnews24.com) - says that Cotto will land with some heavy blows and Manny will go down for the count. Although he will try to get up, Cotto will still prevail with a TKO perhaps by the end of round 6 or middle of round 7.

Teddy Atlas (ESPN Friday Night Fights Commentator) - thinks that Pacquiao’s tenacity combined with the Margarito memory will get rid of Cotto inside of five maybe three rounds. He says that this will not be the epic battle that people are expecting it to be.

Edwin G. Espejo (writer, Asian Correspondent) - thinks that the Pacman has the qualities of a ‘torero’ that can bring down the bull from Puerto Rico.

Paulie Malignaggi (former Light Welterweight champion) - says that everyone will have their reality check on November 14 when Cotto knocks the Pacman out.

Sampson Lewkowicz (international boxing matchmaker) - says that the Pacman is too talented, too strong, and too fast for Cotto.

Panchito Reyes (boxing trainer) – has no doubt that Pacquiao will win by KO in six rounds.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. (self-proclaimed best trainer in boxing) - believes that Roach made a mistake by thinking that Cotto is not that good. He says that Cotto is a good puncher who can take out the Pacman once he hits him to the body or to the head.

Lyle Fitzsimmons (writer, Boxingscene.com) – says he likes Pacquiao in 10. He believes that the fight is a bad mix for Cotto no matter where it occurs in the scale.

Cory Spinks (former Light Middleweight champion) - believes that Pacquiao’s speed will get him on top even though he’s not as big and strong as Cotto.

Emmanuel Steward (Hall of Fame boxing trainer and commentator) - says that Cotto will punish Manny with pressure, weight, size, and punching power. Even though it will be a very dangerous fight, he is confident that Cotto will still prevail.

Bernard Hopkins (former undisputed world middleweight champion) - does not think Cotto’s face can withstand 12 rounds in this fight.

Kyle Lucas (writer, Doghouseboxing.com) - believes that Pacquiao will win with a unanimous points victory, but he won’t be surprised if Pacquiao wins via a late round KO either.

Sergio Mora (former Light Middleweight champion) - thinks that Pacquiao will throw 70 punches in a round but it won’t be enough to stop Cotto. Says that Cotto will win by knockout in seven rounds.

Matt Stolow (writer, Examiner.com Dallas) – his instinct tells him that Cotto can be in the fight for five rounds but after that it will be all Pacquiao from then on.

Johnny Benz (writer, Doghouseboxing.com) – says he doesn’t see Cotto making it out of round 8. He says that even though Cotto is a tough and skillful fighter, Pacquiao is just the total package in this fight.

Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz (former undisputed lightweight world champion) - says that Pacquiao is like the energizer bunny as he just keeps on punching but Cotto’s power will give him the victory.

Yoel Judah (former fighter and father of Zab Judah) – says that Pacquiao will slip and dip and give Cotto the shoulder rolls. He thinks that Pacquiao is just too fast for Cotto.

Andre Dirrell (Super Six Middleweight tournament contender) - says that Cotto is too slow and that he has never seen anyone get in and get out as well as Pacquiao during his fights. He is confident Pacquiao will win either by knockout or unanimous decision.

Felix Trinidad (former Light Middleweight & Middleweight champion) - thinks that Pacquiao won’t be a full Welterweight on the night of the fight and that Cotto will start taking over by rounds 7,8, or 9. He believes Cotto will win by decision or even by knockout.

James “Lights Out” Toney (six-division world champion fighter) – says that Cotto is an overhyped class B fighter courtesy of his promoter Bob Arum. He believes Pacquiao will destroy Cotto because of his speed and power.

Ronnie Shields (boxing trainer) - says he is going with Cotto in this fight as the only person who ever stopped him was Margarito whom he thinks was on to something during their fight .

Devin Vargas (former US Amateur Heavyweight champion) – says he has to go with Pacquiao as he is one of his favorite fighters right now.

Kendall Holt (former Light Welterweight champion) - believes that Cotto will end up stopping Pacquiao since he’s too big and strong.

Brad Cooney (writer, Examiner.com Mississippi) - opines that the only way Pacquiao loses is if he strays away from the game plan and brawls with Cotto. But if Pacman sticks by Freddie Roach’s plan and uses his speed then he will get a unanimous decision.

Reynaldo Sanchez (writer, Boxeomundial.com) - says that the advantages that Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach tried to impose with the catchweight will not be enough. He believes that Cotto will give his best performance and end the Filipino’s dreams and bring him back to reality.

Overall, a total of 35 knowledgeable boxing personalities have unknowingly participated in our mock-up poll by virtue of their public pronouncements for the upcoming megafight come November 14th.

Pacquiao got the nod of 21 out of the 35 while Cotto garnered 14 out of the 35, giving the Pacman a relatively close 60-40 edge over the Boricua Bomber.

For the record, Vegas bookmakers are currently pegging Pacquiao as a (-240) favorite in this fight while Cotto is at (+190).

What makes boxing so exciting though is the fact that nothing is really certain until the opening bell, hence one undecided ‘pollster’, Sugar Shane’s father Jack Mosley, might have provided the best answer when he said:

“I’ll tell you something about that fight, I don’t know which fighter is going to win, but the winner in the end will be Bob Arum”

That  is aside from us of course, the boxing fans, who should be thankful to the powers that be for making a fight of this magnitude happen.

“I’ll tell you something about that fight, I don’t know which fighter is going to win, but the winner in the end will be Bob Arum,”

The winners are us, boxing fans. Be glad arum has no problem pitting his top fighters against each other.

If it’s up to mayweather, you’d see mismatches galore the entire year.

I agree 100%. I should have worked that one into the article.

Anyway, thanks for the input :-)

I agree with you completely. This is a fight that all boxing fans would be fortunate to see.

Nice input. I should have worked that into the article. Thanks :)

I was tagged as crazy when I gave Hatton zero chance. Please tag me again as crazy for giving Cotto zero chance. Pacquiao will come in at fight night a middleweight, maybe 154 lbs negating the size and weight difference that all of you are barking about. At 154 Pacman’s power multiplies, his punch resistance increases while possessing the speed of a featherweight. This is the reason why Pacquiao was maintaining his weight at 150 by eating 5x a day to get accustomed to the added weight. At 150 it is easy to decrease weight to 145 lbs, the agreed weight and it is easy to rehydrate to 154 lbs.

Emmanuel Steward. I seen him as HBO commentator in every Pacquiao fight. And in the previous pacman fight, it was evident that he always favored whoever the opponents of manny. Evidently, ALL HIS PREDICTIONS WERE WRONG! If u will be still be wrong this time, please stop making predictions in the future!

I think you only have 34 knowledgeable boxing experts. Manuel perez is not an expert! he is not even a good writer. his opinion does not count, he does know anything about boxing!

  7. Posted November 3, 2009 at 8:37 pm

It’s quite a breath of fresh air to see the Pretty Boy root for Pacquiao. Probably because he had no other choice.

  8. Posted November 3, 2009 at 9:00 pm

When I fought Manny the third time, he was such a boxing machine that i don’t really know how to solve his hard punches. Manny is getting better and better each fight. Manny by 1st round KO!

Why include Manuela Perez in your list (poll) of boxing experts?
He is the worst boxing writer in which he claims to be.
Biased and no integrity at all.

You call Manuel Perez as knowledgeable ? The guy has his lips so far Cotto’s ass that his lips would get hit first before Cotto goes down.
The guy has the most biased opinion that he hardly counts as a boxing writer. He should write for the National Enquirer and write an article on Bat Boy instead.

Don’t forget to include my nostradamic vision on the 14th. Round 1 to 3 – Pacquiao has to KO Cotto in, otherwise
Round 4 to 5 – Cotto will KO pacquiao.
Round 6 to 7 – If there’s no KO in the first 5, a TKO by Pacman.
Round 7 to 8 – Cotto will TKO Pacman if no winner in round 1-7
Round 9 to 10 – It’s Cotto from hereon if the match will go past 8 rounds by unanimous decision. But Manny will give his best within the first half or lose the fight. Remember by words — NOSTRADAMUS

wow first of all…this shithead who wrote this article is worthless. pacquiao plans to run from cotto? pacquiao never runs you ignorant bitch. and to these other stupid mofos who always be tryin to predict and shit saying blah blah… ya’ll stop it, for real. always gotta be saying this will win by this round and all that, because of his power and whatsoever, but when the real fight comes. ya’ll be feelin dumb of ur whack-ass predictions. who u always underestimate? who u always say that is overrated and is not that strong really? pacquiao man..but after each fight ya’ll be scratchin ur empty heads cause u be surprised on how he always bring something new to the table, and comes out on top, no doubt. everybody has got to get over the pacquiao-marquez fight seriously. Do u really think that at this time, if juan manuel marquez fights pacquiao he’d win? let’s be serious…look at how pacquiao improved fight after fight, so he lost before, but look at the guy now.
AND to you manuel perez, u’s a dumb motherfucker for real… saying pacquiao might tryna run from cotto..man kill urself! the match is over…and cotto got owned, i thought that guy had power punches? u see how pacman just walk through those punches fool, and when cotto was just in survival mode look at how he RUNS FROM PACQUIAO and pacman be chasing him around the ring..cotto had guts, but pacquiao had balls. u ate ur statement and ur stupid article manuel perez..
