The controversial fight between David Haye and Dereck Chisora at Upton Park, London has ended in the 5th round. It was a conclusive win with Haye winning every round.
This was the fight the British Boxing Board of Control never wanted to happen. They had taken away Chisora’s licence to fight after he was involved in a brawl with Haye following Chisora’s fight with Vitali Klitschko.
The authorities would have taken away Haye’s licence too – if he had one.
The fight was sanctioned by the Luxembourg boxing association, called in by promoter Frank Warren so he could get the fight on the road.
Chisora builds the box office for his fights by playing the villain and this was no exception. The fight was a 40,000 sell out because after the brawl with Haye Chisora had threatened to kill Haye – a threat that lost him his licence to box.
The consolation is that both men will share a big pay day, Haye’s cut was reputed to be $4M, not bad for a fighter who holds no titles and has supposedly retired.
The drum will begin to beat now for a contest between Haye and one of the Klitschko brothers. This is what Haye is angling for but once again the brothers will play hard to get.
The question is, has Haye got any credibility left? His dismal showing against Wladimir Klitschko came when he was completely out boxed and resorted to blaming a broken toe for his easy defeat.
The answer to that question is yes. When it comes to selling a fight, Haye is up there with the best and his campaign for a re-match will start immediately.
Haye had Chisora down in the 5th round but the wild man has a tough jaw and came back. Haye put him down again to put himself back in the world title business – he hopes.
