Boxing legend Larry Merchant has indicated the much awaited Pacquiao-Mayweather megafight is close to being a reality. If there’s anyone on the HBO coverage team one can trust, it’s the oldtimer. Jim Lampley is too “establishment” and Emmanuel Steward is an active trainer, but Ole Larry is simply the boxing fan with a microphone. He’s been around boxing so long that saying he’s forgotten about the sport more than most will ever learn doesn’t seem such an exaggeration. And whatever he says on air, he does so out of being a fan, and yes, a bit drunk I suppose. There’s nothing in him angling to be the next trainer of the fighter HBO is covering at the moment, neither is he mouthing the full official company line. OK maybe just a little of the company (read: HBO) line, but once he gets a bit tipsy you know all bets are off! You know he’s the real deal when someone trying to crash his post-fight interview gets the “tackle”. And in spite of some powerbrokers trying to ease him out of the HBO crew, he still has enough pull with the gods to be able to stick around.

If and when the Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight comes about, boxing fans both hard-core and casual would have their Christmas season starting from the official announcement up to the fight itself. Assuming the deal gets made this June, that would be like five months of yuletide joy.

What is it with Nonito Donaire? The Filipino Flash can’t seem to get a break. He’s been chasing a big fight since forever it seems, and yet there is still no light at the end of his tunnel. A change in promoter and trainer, and a new wife to boot still could not give him a boost. Whatever fight he’s given, he wins but alas, life is not that simple.

Manny Pacquiao will be receiving his Fighter of the Decade award from the BWAA. Maybe Kevin Iole should hand out the prestigious award onstage?
