The safest way to avoid seasickness is to avoid the sea. However this is not always an option.

Anyone can get seasick, even people who have been at sea their entire life could get seasick. Some say that if you got a good balance then you tend to get seasick easier.

Staying out for sea for a longer period and you will get something called sea legs. Your inner ear is taking care of your balance, and after about a day it will normally get used to the motions at sea. So if you are seasick you it will most likely disappear after a day.

Eat and drink

Eating and drinking is important if you want to stay away from the seasickness or cure it. If you are out of energy you will not recover from your seasickness, so it’s very important to eat. The same applies to drinking, if you are dehydrated you will not recover from your seasickness, or at least you will delay your recovery.

Warm and Dry

Keeping yourself warm and dry is also increasing your chances to stay away from seasickness. If you get cold and wet, your morale might decrease and you will drain your energy resources alto faster. So staying warm and dry will help to keep the seasickness away. And don’t forget to try to be well-rested, if you’re tired, your energy resources will drain faster.

If you get seasick

If you get seasick there are a few things you could do. The seasickness is physiological and is fooling your sense of balance. If you get a task to focus at then you might suppress you seasickness. People steering a boat rarely get seasick, and it’s not uncommon to hand the steering wheel to someone that is seasick. You could also concentrate on another task, or concentrate and look at the horizon. In either case staying out in the fresh air is important.

Another trick is to lie down. If you lay down your sense of balance will be disabled. Laying down in the center/rear parts of the boat and the seasickness will disappear within seconds. Its extremely rare that anyone would throw up while lying down.

Summary

Use the advices in this article to try to avoid seasickness. If you get seasick anyway, keep following the advices to dampen the seasickness. And if nothing works, it will eventually disappear over time.

I’ve never personally been seasick, though I’ve been out on a boat on several occasions, including the cruise I went on a few years ago to the Bahamas. Least I know there are ways to get rid of it besides sea sickness pills. My cousin seemed to think that was the only treatment for herself.
