Who Shot Cha!

Where have all the shooters disappeared too? The likes of Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Dirk Nowitzki, Larry Bird, Peja Stojakovic, just to name a few. These are the players who no matter how the defense is set are ready to take their share of shots night in and night out. It’s like the league and the majority of the fans would rather see the slash and dash kind of basketball. Instead of making a shot in someone’s face they rather try to make a highlight to get on Sports Center.

The greats new the secret, Michael Jordan for instance did not get drafted because he had a killer jump shot. He diligently worked on his shot in his career and now is considered one of the best shooters of all time. This is inevitably to lengthen their career and have a better rounded game. Once you reach a certain age in your life your body physically does not react as well as it used too. You can’t slash to the hoop as you used to, you lose elevation etc.  If you don’t develop your jump shot you can indeed look forward to either keeping the bench warm or in when all else fails, out of work. Shooting has become a lost art in the NBA. Players are actually looking for the foul call apposed to a quality shot. It’s like they have no faith in their skills as a shooter so they rely on the refs to call fouls.

Case and point is SG for the Miami Heat Dwayne Wade. This guy shouldn’t be in the NBA he should be in movies or commercials….oh wait he already does commercials. I am sure you seen the NIKE commercial with Dwayne Wade falling down repeatedly and getting back up. I think the original message is that this guy gets knocked down but always gets back up. I viewed the commercial as this guy is constantly flopping. I look for the defended and guess what I don’t see him but I do see the ref ready to make the call regardless. Dwayne Wade is second in the League to Kobe Bryant on fouls drawn. He is #1 on the list for average FT attempts per game with 11.2. Last but not least, 31% of his total career points are from the line.

This is just one example of the shooters disappearance and how the league has changed. The players are now looking for that call and putting more emphasis on looking for the contact then looking for a shot. Keep that in the playground why don’t you?

I used to work at the State College Basketball games here. The girls seemed to really want to shoot. I mention them first because they out-ranked the boys team lol. But viewing the pros, it doesn’t seem to have the same aggression and that one or two great nemesis to come in over it all and make that shot. That’s what I used to watch for. I agree, I don’t see it anymore. Great perspective. :)

Great point. Even in the Olympics, Team USA Mens Basketball are getting called for everything, carrying, double dribble…etc. In the NBA, you never see those calls. Its like they look for the contact instead of making the shot…God forbid they have to get their points from making shots instead of at the line…
