The nu
mber one spot goes to…
- The Cleveland Cavaliers: The number one player in the Nation Basketball Association is Lebron James. A brilliant offensive player with stellar defensive skills added to possbily the most gifted athletic abilities ever, James will lead the Cavs to the best record this year. Offseason acquisition Shaquille O’Neal will finally prevent the opposing teams from triple teaming James. The supporting cast includes Anderson Varjao, Mo Williams, Anthony Parker, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Don’t be surprised to see the Cavs return to the Conference Finals this year, and go even further.
- Los Angeles Lakers: Back for a repeat? Possibly, but Kobe Bryant will have to share the ball this year to get past tough teams. Andrew Bynum, the 10th overall pick of the 2005 NBA draft is finally ready to show what he can do. Back from injury, his play will determine how deep into the playoffs the Lakers go. Veterans Ron Artest and Lamar Odom will have to step up their play as well.
- Boston Celtics: The Big Three may be getting older, but Boston will still be a threat late in the season. With young talent Rajon Rondo extending his contract, he’ll get more time to learn from Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen. The Celtics are still in need of a dominant center, and Kendrick Perkins must play physical. Without and inside-the-paint threat, the Celtics leave teams free to cover the deadly accurate shooters of the Celtics. Sixth man Eddie House had a great season last year, and the Celtics may look to him if any injuries occur.
- Orlando Magic: This team is overflowing with talent. The big man, Dwight Howard, is set to have another monster year, but don’t think he’s satisfied with just a Slam Dunk Trophy, he’ll be looking for an Eastern Conference Finals Trophy instead. High flying vet Vince Carter joins the squad as well as sharpshooter J.J. Redick. Expect a big year in stats from Jameer Nelson, with the ever growing Howard in the paint. Teams that take the Magic lightly will not fair well.
- Atlanta Hawks: Rounding up the rear, a sleeper pick, the Hawks. One of the youngest teams in the league, the Hawks will need leadership from Mike Bibby to succeed this year. Defensive star Josh Smith along with young center Al Horford will make the Hawks a hard team to score against. On the other end of the court, Joe Johnson provides Mike Bibby a scoring tool. Do not expect the 2008-2009 Hawks to show up this year, as this team may go all the way.
