Theirs is a sports rivalry so great that there is no need for surnames (or it might just be that they both have really unique first names). So I just watched the Lebron James movie and to be fair, I watched the Kobe Bryant documentary composed by film maker Spike Lee. After hours of research (the NBA really needs to organized all there stats in one place), carefully going back and watching the buzzer beaters, the teammate interactions (including random dance-offs and on-court conflicts), the opinions of sports broadcasters, coaches, players, and even Lebron, and Kobe themselves, I have come up with what I think is the most logical response to the Nike puppet war and ongoing fan debate everywhere which is simply: “Who is the best player in the National Basketball Association?” Of course MANY will disagree with my answer, but argue with the facts (provided by ESPN, EliasSportsBureau, and NBA.com by the way) and not random “what if scenarios” or your “feelings” and if you can find error with them than I shall be at your mercy.

Like a cheesy TV program, I’ll place the actual decision at the end and start with the accolades for both players. We’ll start with the Black Mamba since he’s the elder of the two. The four-time NBA champion is one of the best scorers in NBA history and according to all but one of his teammates, (Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t seem to like him very much) he is the smartest player in the NBA; some call him a player-coach who is ready and willing to assist and command his teammates on the court. Analyst have called him basketball’s Peyton Manning alluding to the manner in which he breaks down defenses and vocally directs the pace of the game while on the court. Of course, we don’t want to slight him on his physical skills either. Daylight for Kobe while shooting spells two points (or three depending on where he is on the court) and he has the ball handling, jumping, and coordination skills to make defenders look silly any time he has the rock. Conversely, he is also a standout defender. Kobe has been voted NBA All-Defensive 1st Team 7 Times. Head Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers Phil Jackson, who also coached Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, said when comparing the two-”Kobe has better skills…he has a better outside shot than Michael”. From the man that coached arguably the two greatest players to ever walk on a basketball court, that’s a pretty big compliment.

On the other side, we have THE KING better known as Lebron James. If you saw him play in high school, you just knew that this kid was going to be special. Now, seven years into his career, he’s become the fastest player to reach 10,000 points, and he has set numerous statistical records including best consistent statistical performance in four areas (Points, Assists, Rebounds, and Blocks) throughout a stretch of 20 games, third highest career scoring average (27.8 PPG) behind only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain respectively. As a fan, it seems that Lebron is poised to dominate the game of basketball for years to come. Many have cited his inability to win a championship ring as his Achilles heel although there are many players with rings who stand far beneath Lebron in sheer talent and also the caliber of competitiveness that he brings to the floor every night.

With all of that being said, Lebron James himself said in an interview with sixty minutes last year that Kobe Bryant is the best player in the league and to the disappointment of many of my readers I’m sure, I’d have to agree with him. Kobe Bryant, for his skill as a shooter, passer, defender, ball-handler, playmaker, and his basketball IQ which is notably unmatched by any other player in the league, is: THE BEST PLAYER IN THE NBA today. Lebron qualified his statement saying “I’m getting better everyday” and who is to say what the future holds, but as Phil Jackson pointed out in the comparison between Kobe and Michael, Kobe Bryant’s ability to go stretches of games where it seems that he is truly unstoppable (12 straight over 40, 4 straight over 50) and his ability to make the players around him permanently better is something that has NEVER been seen in the National Basketball Association…ever. Now ranked 13th among all players in NBA scoring history, with four titles under his belt, and the type of career that will be studied and imitated long after he is gone (both for physical and mental prowess), Kobe has little to prove. Although admittedly, there are players who are stronger, quicker, more athletic (Lebron certainly is one of them), and players who put up more assists, or more rebounds, Kobe Bryant has encompassed all of the skills of a great basketball player from the outset of his career and has shown us time and time again that his dedication, sportsmanship, and prowess (again both mental and physical) in this game is unmatched. Lebron averages more points than Kobe (Career & currently in this season). He also has a better career shot percentage than Kobe (arguably because Kobe takes far more difficult shots and gets less dunks and layups than Lebron) and a better steal, assist, and block average than the Bryant. Again, however, its not merely about stats but the manner in which the stats are used to assist the team and in this area, Kobe is the winner. That is why when it comes the being the best, the King must settle for being a prince to the Black Mamba………..for now.

Not that is not true and you know that.

Oscar Robertson was the kind of player that overcame the racial components of the game and each player enters the league with different hurdles in the present and those overcome in the past.
Michael Jordan learned that scoring 63 points in a playoff game is not what a team sport is about. Lebron could easily smash the 81 point tally or even Wilt’s amazing record but he has shown a maturity and understanding of the team concept since he entered the league. Coach MIKE Brown, while having a defensive philosophy since Day 1 was clearly a ‘young” coach, groomed if memory serves correct by Pop, so consider if P. Jackson was the coach, would Lebron be more or less of a coach on the floor? For me, his position and abilities with assists allows him to sacrifice parts of his game, that Kobe, even if he is the best player in the league, cannot bring to the team from DAY 1 since entering the NBA. KING James has revolutionized the game … he is a combination of Magic and Malone and he respects the legends that are not playing, like MJ, and the current stars, like Kobe, because he is unique as a person as well as a player. IMHO, the simple truth is that Lebron is the best player vs. Kobe without any hesitation :)
We are all entitled to our opinions :)

King James is in danger of an early exit … Orlando is their nemesis so I’d like to at least see that!

@manilatop10 If you honestly believe Lebron could EASILY smash the 81 point tally you are stupid…no one can EASILY score 80 points in a game Lebron can score 30 pretty easy, but to say a player who has never scored 60 pts in a game could easily break 81..and even 100 is just stupid

    @Carl

Actually, the game was against the grizzles and the match was soo lopsided the other players are even quoted saying the purposefully kept passing to kobe over and over again to make a record.

Lebron and any other superstar could have easily done the same feat.

Now check out MJ, scoring 63 points in a play off game…that’s hard to do.

    @Adam,
You’re obviously retarded.. The game was against the Raptors. Kobe is just a great well rounded player and your just a common hater!!!!
Kobe Bryant= Best in the NBA!

Sorry, I meant Raptors. Doesn’t change a thing i said.

I’m not a hater…although I disagree with how Kobe runs his personal life, I think he’s a great player and one of the greatest. But to claim that a player scoring 81 points in a game was just because he is good is a joke. You and I and everyone here knows the average for kobe is between 25-35….81 is far from that Average. Don’t be dumb, look at the facts and get off Kobe’s nuts.

LeBron shot a better 2pt% then Durant did this year, so his outside shot is garbage argument is out the window. Not to mention LeBrons on/off % is better, His assist is better, he grabs more rebounds, shoots a better %,gets to the foul line more, has more blocks, more steals, and yes he is more clutch, and there are stats to prove this. Kobe shot more times this season then LeBron, but Lebron had more makes. When kobe did’nt have Gasol or Shaq he did’nt get any where in the playoffs. In fact once Shaq left the Lakers failed to make it to the Playoffs, and did’nt get anywhere. Then Gasol came and they made it to the Finals 3 out of 3 years? No wonder Kobe has only won 2 Finals MVP’s out of 7 finals apearences. And his last Finals MVP was horrific. Has a Finals MVP player ever shot that horrible? Kobe averages like 40% in the Finals. LeBron played way better against the Magic then Kobe did, Cavs lose in 6, Lakers win in 5? LeBron had better numbers then Kobe aginst the Celtics, and they lose in 6, and the Lakers win in 7? LeBron basically does every thing better then Kobe, but yet Kobe wins rings because of his teamates and Phil Jackson. LeBron is a better playoff preformer as well, and all ready has more 40 point games then Kobe does in the Playoffs for his carrer. LeBomb is better, and if he goes to a team with an AllStar like Kobe has, and a good coach, he will win a ring.

if LeBron is a better playoff performer than Kobe how do you explain LeBron’s dismall performance against the Celtics? he looked strong going in to the first couple games than started sucking hard. It’s easy to see that LeBron can’t handle playing bunches of big games in a short amount of time. Kobe however can play 25 post season games and still be rocking it when he wins a ring.

Ahhh are u crazy, Lebron and kobe played equally againts the celtis kobe had didn’t have one good game in boston( don’t count the bs game he hit 6 straight jumpers in da 3rd it was a great series of plays but nowhere near a good game! When bron played orlando he became the first player to average 40 10 and 7 through 5 playoffs game! He ended the series at 38 8.5 and 8.5! He has as many playoff games winners as kobe in only 4 postseasons! Kobe is supposedly this great closer but come playoff time his only remotely great moment was in the finals againts ind! What did bron do to detroit in the palace in game five of the east finals? Or what did he do to orlando in game five of the east finals with his back against the wall in 09! He’s a betta playoff performer no question

“Again, however, its not merely about stats but the manner in which the stats are used to assist the team and in this area”

kobe isnt even the best laker. gasol is a more productive player overall if u consider t/os, fg/made vs fg/attempted, etc. add up kobes negative stats too and the lakers would be better with any other team-minded guard. the more ur opponent has the ball, the smaller the gap between ur pts and theirs

You can’t really compare the two. Kobe is probably out of his prime whereas LeBron is in the middle of his. That means that Kobe is past his athletic peak while LeBron might not have even reached his yet. I can say this, at 25 Kobe had a much more complete game than LeBron has now. So comparing apples to apples, I would take a 25 yr. old Kobe over a 25 yr. old LeBron any day. Kobe is a better shooter, on-ball defender, can operate as facilitator AND play off of the ball in offensive sets, and he just knows how to win at age 25 or 32. LeBron has been arguably the best player in the league on the best team in the league (top seed in the entire playoffs 2 years in a row) and couldn’t get out of his conference.

Okay let’s be real about the Kobe/Lebron argument. 1. Lebron is a better rebounder, passer. The key is to switch them and who would make the players better around them. Kobe has an all star big man a hall of fame coach and in his career has played with Glen Rice, Robert Horry, Horace Grant, Rick Fox, Shaq, Gasol, Odum, Bynum, Fisher, A. C. Green, Brian Shaw, Ron Harper, He was drafted by charlotte but traded to the best organization in sports won three championships and whined his way to a team without another superstar and could not get out of the first round. He then whined until he got a trade for Gasol and two more championships. What would he do with the cavs teams that won 60+ two years in a row gave Boston there best series in 2008 and went to the finals in 2007.

    Posted December 28, 2010 at 11:58 am

Lebron is an absolute beast. 6′8/6′9 and 250, with the skills to play all positions on the court. He is truly fantastic. He is taller than the Big O, more built for the inside than Pippen, and more durable than G. Hill (argueably the three most consistently, well-rounded players ever). Unfortunately, after 7 years in the league, it has not translated to a ring. Being the NBA darling, a lot of excuses were made for him. His team sucked. Kobe has this and that, but he doesn’t. Etc, etc…

I respect LBJ’s move to Miami. He bet all his chips and he is now in a must win situation. He relinquished being the NBA darling (next up Durant). He teamed up with superstars, and a good enough supporting cast. He no longer have excuses. I now respect LBJ as a competitor.

I personally have been wishing for a Lebron vs Kobe showdown in the finals ever since the Cavs made it in 2007, and the Lakers became a contender after getting Pau late in 2008. Too bad KG and Ray Allen had to move to Boston.

Why the finals? Why do rings count so much? That’s cause in the finals, all chips are in, and there is no more room for excuses. Kobe has been waiting for Lebron the last 3 finals. It was Lebron who couldn’t make it back after being swept by the Spurs. Now with Wade, Bosh, and Co, he should be able to make it. He has to….he has bet everything to get there, cause beating Kobe when he is 35 and over the hill means nothing if he really wants to show he is better than Kobe.

So what am I saying exactly? I’m saying Kobe is top dog! No stats. No what ifs. Only pure accomplishments and winning one way or another when it counts . It’s up to Lebron to challenge him, not the other way around…

NOTE: It’s inconvenient that LBJ teamed up with D-Wade though. If the heat reaches the finals and faces the Lakers and wins, who was it who took the title of Top Dog from Kobe? LBJ or D-Wade?

What bothers me is comparing Kobe and lebron is that Kobe fans use championships as a determining factor. Kobe was lucky enough to go to a long time great franchise, ride the bench and learn from experienced players and a great coach. James went to a horrible team, no chance to mature, learn, or even have a superstar teammate to depend on. So to say Kobe is the best is because he’s been on one of the nba’s greatest team and lucky enough to win championships is ridiculous. I still have yet to see Kobe carry a team from the worst nba record to the best and lead them to the finals for the first in many years.

If james begun with the lakers in his rookie year then the rings would matter. And the lakers won those championships, not Kobe, he had four other guys on the court that made him look good, got him open looks, and did all the things Kobe don’t excell at like, steals, block shots, rebounds, assists, and help defense.

The lakers built a team that four players don’t expect to score big numbers but are expected to rebound, defend, and that can win without him. And have experience, and maybe not superstars but players that if needed can carry the team to a win. And they have in more instances then any one admits.

So James not winning championships is an excuse and the only one Kobe fans have to say kobes the greatest. You can’t judge James to the lakers success its not his fault he wasn’t as lucky as Kobe to be placed on a great team, but yet james stayed 7 years and turned a losing team into a winning team without one other strong player to help him.

And that makes James a better player than Kobe.
Kobe is lucky and landed on a great team that most likely won the same championships with a mcgrady, wade, allen, iverson, brown instead of bryant.

  23. josh
    Posted February 6, 2011 at 7:13 pm

A side by side comparison of Kobe and James statistics clearly shows james is a all around complete player with more to offer a team then Kobe was in his seventh season and any season since he was drafted.
Lebron will surpass Kobes personal achievements and do it in less time then Kobe has. And don’t forget Kobe couldn’t slow down micheal jordan, as a over the hill player. But james has contained Kobe and the great lakers more than any other 1 superstar driven team. the so called patented Kobe fade away was copied from jordan and Kobe seen it numerous times up close and he couldn’t stop jordan either.

Kobe is a product of placement and nothing more. If Kobe stayed with charlotte he would be just another guard and nothing more.

Look at Shannon Brown, he comes in for Kobe and gets open threes, amazing dunks and only plays minimal minutes. Its the other four lakers that make that happen.

Jordan and bulls, great team, Kobe and the lakers great team. Bulls without jordan good team, lakers without Kobe, still a great team.
And as for James and cavs, good team, without james they are the worst team in the nba. Who else made that impact on a team?

  24. josh
    Posted February 7, 2011 at 11:22 am

One more thing, if james needs to beat bryant to be top dog then who named bryant top dog, he never beat jordan in the finals so top dog retired and I doubt jordan will say bryant could beat him, lol. Better stick with player statistics not team achievements when comparing players.

  25. josh
    Posted February 7, 2011 at 12:58 pm

I want to know when Kobe became top dog or the best player and why lebron has to beat the lakers in a championship against Kobe to say he’s a better player??? If rings determine the best NBA player then Fisher has 5 just like Kobe so he also should be the best player in the nba. Fisher was there for the 3 with Shaq, left when Shaq did and the lakers got him back when gasol joined. So Bryant and Fisher are both great superstars, funny a 5 time championship point guard isn’t on the allstar team, if rings are what makes a player great then I would assume since both have the same amount, played together to get them why isn’t Fisher getting any credit? His stats that’s why, fisher could have 50 rings but with his stats he would not be thought of as a superstar, that’s why at the end of the day a player is judged on his stats, so being on a championship team is a bonus and not a tool to determine a great player.
That’s whys its the championship Lakers not the champion Kobe Bryant who plays with the lakers, championships determine the best team, not the best player. So Kobe being on championship team is not a statistic that proves he is better than lebron or that he is even a great player. He’s scored a lot of 30+ games and does scoring 40+ and still losing the game make him great,, a great player would help his team figure out what to change instead of just shooting every time the ball touched his hands. And yes ill give him credit the last few years he has been more involved in better the team, but it took 10 years to get there so great no, of course he’s a good player if he wasnt he would not be in the NBA. sorry Kobe I doubt you have time to be great.

  26. Posted February 7, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Wow. Its almost been 2 years since I wrote this article and to josh (comments prior to mine) you make some very valid arguments but I stand by my decision. I watched coach interviews, games, the lebron movie, the kobe movie, interviews with other players (including Jordan who calls Kobe a FAR better player than Lebron) and although I love LBJ, it seems that the consensus among most players, fans, and coaches is that Kobe is a better player. And no…rings don’t mean everything but since winning championships are the goals of the athletes, it does weigh heavily on our measure of their performance (1st of course is how you go about reaching that goal but just as important is the fact that you have to reach it) If your goal is simply scoring than Kareem would be the best (#number one in points all-time) and if your goal is simply championships Bill Russell and the rest of the 60’s celtics would be considered the best. (Russell has 11 championship rings) Anyways keep the debate going, it will be fun to see how the season plays out with LBJ on a star-studded roster now.

No matter what Lebron does… Until he wins a championship he’s just like the other players who didn’t win one. Rings are symbols, treasures in the NBA that means, “We did it”. Get a ring and then I’ll compare him with Kobe. I’ll change my argument then. Til then. Kobe hit 81 points. 5 rings. Nobody compares playoff averages anymore. Regular season doesn’t mean anything so who cares if Lebum has the better average besides his fans. Sad thing is…. Kobe isn’t in his prime and it’s still a big argument. LOL

The funniest thing about the comparison between Lebron & Kobe and were Kobe supporters help Lebron’s case is Kobes a G so his ball handling, points, steals, shooting percentages and overall experience should surpass Lebron on more than just how many RINGS he has. The fact Kobe can’t statistically and has lost the majority of games against Lebron and the cavs (who now hold the worst record in nba HISTORY) although not a finals game a 5 time championship team and a player claiming to be the greatest in the world can’t beat a team that has 1 key player, and you would think Kobe would want to beat Lebron every time they play against each other regardless of the games importance, but that’s not the lakers style, only rings matter in LA. A true competitor wants to win every game, all season every year, not coast until playoffs then beat tired, less talented teams who worked all year, have the best record with out having 4 talented veterans to compliment the 1 star on the team. But I guess I’m the only one who remembered watching Magic battle Bird, Jordan or any of the stars in his time every game they played each other, not just in the playoffs or finals. That’s greatness, not loosing more than 75% of the games against the player you say can’t come close to being the player you are.
I remember the bulls vs lakers in 95, or bulls vs pistons 95, bulls vs celtics 95 and it was like watching finals game 7, every game was important and true competitors don’t have games they give away and say its ok we will be in playoffs so who cares!

@josh youre saying that kobe woudnt win that championship in 2010 without gasol and artest ….. so jordan woudnt win that 6 championship without rodman and pippen….. every team needs an back up like gasol. no superstar wins a championship by his own self … and james lead the cavs to the best record yet but not in a championship…. you freak thats why kobe is the best player….!!!!!

  30. Posted March 31, 2011 at 4:35 am

LEBRON HAS BETTER STATS AND KOBE HAS MORE RINGS…SIMPLY PUT IT, KOBE IS ON A BETTER TEAM AND LEBRON IS A BETTER PLAYER…LEBRON IS THE BEST SINCE JORDAN…PERIOD!!!

JORDAN PLAINLY UNDERSTANDS THAT LEBRON IS POTENTIALLY THE CLOSEST PERSON TO SHATTER ALL OF HIS RECORDS…KOBE IS NO WHERE CLOSE TO JORDAN RECORD-WISE NO MATTER HOW YOU TURN IT. LETS HAVE THIS ARGUMENT FIVE YEARS FROM NOW AND YOU WILL ALL AGREE WITH ME THAT LEBRON IS FAR BETTER…SHAQ MADE IT VERY EASY FOR KOBE TO SHINE…PAUL GASOL DID PRETTY MUCH THE SAME…KOBE PLAYS UNDER THE BEST COACH IN THE LEAGUE WITH FAR BETTER PLAYERS…LEBRON HAS BEEN DOING IT PRETTY MUCH SOLO…WITH THE HELP HE HAS NOW, LETS WAIT AND SEE THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS…HISTORY IS DEFINITELY IN THE MAKING!!!

How can you look at all of those stats and say Kobe is the better player? He only beats LeBron in one category, and that’s free throw percentage. Rings don’t equal a great player. Robert Horry has like 6 rings and can’t touch LeBron in skill.

This debate is completely stupid. Why can\’t we all agree that these 2 guys are great players? I highly favor Kobe because I enjoy his hard work and is a great model to follow on the court (not outside of the court) and I happened to live in LA when Kobe was drafted and it was a very interesting time. Lebron is too a great and will be top 10 all time great players along with Jordan and Kobe. Lebron has abilities only to matched by the MonStars in Space Jam. I would argue that D-Wade and Derric Rose should be in a debate against these guys as well. NBA is a great sport and there have been some great players over time and I guarantee there will be more. BUT for the record..81 pts is never easy not even for an All Star and even if it was isn\’t it still a great acomplishment??. I\’d like to see some Kobe haters try to score 81 pts in a game against paid NBA players. You act like just because it was the raptors that means that they all sucked?? haha..that\’s why they were paid millions to play NBA and we aren\’t.

it amaze me how stupid people are lebron is clearly the better player in every aspect of the game besides freethrows if u watch the cavs games the team plays thru lebron it goes like this lebron shoots lebron dunks lebron shoots lebron gets double teamed and them lebron assist lebron assist lebron assist because 3 other players are open and even when that dont happen even thou it happens every game lebron dish dimes that teams dont espect and get players good looks close to the basket i didnt know nobody on the cavs but big z lebron made me love that whole team why cause he made them better look at mo willaims went to the allstar game played for clippers and now he starts for another team i for got which team but he made others better and more confident in themselves besides that his whole roster was nobodies and they had the best record 2 years straight and when he left the same guys were still there and they instantly became the worst quickly now what happened to kobe the oppisite all the great players left and the already 6x champion coach before those 3 also left he got the nobodies outcome no playoffs couldnt beat the suns and a bunch of whineing u kobe fans make me sick we are not saying hes bad or cant play we are just speaking the truth lebron is better indivisual stats make legendary players and rings make legendary teams get it right the rings if im wrong and yaw right then derrick fisher is kobe equal and robert horry is better than kobe and joran but we know neither is true why because …….. lets say it together THE STATS PROVE IT cased closed goodnight

and dont get it twisted jordan had the same thing nobidies then comes jackson pipen rodman grant who was that white guy he could shoot his ass off i forgot but him to and other players who could either rebound great shoot great or defend great before them jordan was like lebron but with less acheivements its amazing what a good supporting cast and coach can do for u lebron carried a team better than jordan did too and jordan became a better team player still was more of a shooter but not as selfish selttled for less point less shots grabbed more boards blocked more shots got more steals and passed the ball aslo and even patched up his post skill and his big man vs lil man d jordan was great but on a great team with great players in their respective positions lebron has jordan type games and sometimes better u no how many times i heard lebron got this many points this many assist and this many reb only other person to do that is jordan i never heard them say that about kobe ever kobe and jordan teams made them better only difference was jordan already was a legend and looked good without them where as kobe was nobody and a spoiled crybaby who could only shoot not good in any other stat besides his 5 assist i let slide and jordan had d kobe doesnt stick great shooting guards he pick on lil point guards or bad shooting guards when the point guards are good i like kobe but i refuse to give him the credit he doesnt deserve while yaw take away all of the respect and credit that lebron earns night in and night out since season one nothing but hate and doubt since then he has proven over and over again he can do what ever they say he couldnt and yet and still to this day ring and finals mvp for u ring minded fools he still gets thrown under the bus lebrons the best and if he plays like this until he leaves he will be the best ever to play and if he help his team get more rings he will be the greatest team player ever and oh yeah bill russell has 11 rings people why isnt he the greatest lets try this one more time all together THE STATS PROVE IT
