Bob Knight’s Shot at John Calipari… Good Call, Coach
The coach calls it exactly how it is… again.

Bob Knight is an ass. And I love him for it. The best part is this: He knows he’s an ass. And he remains utterly unapologetic for it. He has, for more than 3 decades, called things exactly as he sees them. And lord knows that he’s taken some heat for it.
As a coach, he was often maligned. This is, after all, the man who once threw a chair across the court during an NCAA game. The same man who used to get in his players faces and scream until he war red. When one of his players would do something stupid, he would grab him by the arm, yank him off the floor, and tell him he was an idiot. And then tell reporters after the game that he was an idiot. And then tell the reporters that they were idiots for asking about it. And I love him for it.
There really aren’t any coaches left like Knight. And it’s too bad. Today’s college athletes are, at times, spoiled little punks. They’ve had their feet kissed since junior high, and been told their poop doesn’t stink. Which is why you get spoiled little brats like Allen Iverson polluting the NBA. No discipline. Coach Knight was all about discipline. And I love him for it.
He taught his kids to play the way the game was meant to be played. He preached fundamentals. He taught the concept of team first. And he did it fair. Bob Knight was an utter ass; but he was also everything that is good and pure (or supposed to be, at any rate) about college basketball.
He has continued, as an announcer, to be an ass. He kisses up to no one, and still tells people they’re idiots. He does so as he always has; unabashedly. And to this day, he offers no apologies. And I love him for it.
On Thursday night, Bob Knight gave us another Bob Knight moment. While speaking on current Kentucky coach John Calipari, Knight said this:
“We’ve gotten into this situation where integrity is really lacking and that’s why I’m glad I’m not coaching,” he said. “You see we’ve got a coach at Kentucky who put two schools on probation and he’s still coaching. I really don’t understand that“
And he’s dead on. Calipari builds his programs the old fashioned way; he buys them. He breaks the rules, and he cheats. When he gets caught, his school gets put on probation. His players, involved or not, pay the price. And then he moves on, leaving disaster in his wake. And he’s done this more than once. And now Kentucky, a school as rich in basketball history as any, has mortgaged it’s future to bring him on board.
It’s symptomatic of the problems with college basketball, but that doesn’t leave Calipari blameless. You can argue the notion that college athletes should get paid forever. (For the record: I believe they should, but on a small scale. Give the kids the equivalent of 10 bucks an hour, 40 hours a week. They do work hard. But they’re already, in most cases, receiving free room, board, and books, and the small item that has been all but forgotten… A college education. The fact that 50% of them will never use it isn’t the university’s fault) The bottom line is that there are rules, and Calipari randomly and indiscriminately breaks them. Knight is right. He has no class or integrity whatsoever. John Calipari is the true ass.
Bobby Knight being Bobby Knight. And being right. Just as he has been for 30 some years, Knight is exactly what college basketball needs. And I love him for it.

interesting, thanks for sharing
Very interesting
“Bob Knight is an ass. And I love him for it. The best part is this: He knows he’s an ass. And he remains utterly apologetic for it.”
I’m sure you mean utterly unapologetic.
I liked this….Bobby will never change, and he should never change. He also graduated a big percentage of his players. I’m glad he called out Calipari – most of the the other broadcasters wouldn’t dare do that.
After the nightmare that was Billy G, I think Kentucky was pretty desperate for a coach with personality. Calipari fits that bill, at least. As for the rest, we’ll have to wait and see … but I would have hoped UK would have learned its lesson after the events of the Sutton era.
I have no problem with coaches being tough on their students but I despise it when they call them names. I hate it when they curse them out because it condones such behavior with the kids. My son plays high school baskeball and I find it offensive when their coaches call them names for losing a game.
I was a die hard Memphis fan and I hate Calipari forever now. He hung us out to dry and we may be have our 2 loss year turn into a 40 loss year. Thanks John, Thanks..
The article was well written Mn, but you have missleading information about coach Cal. UofMass was never put on probation, just the games they played that year was taken away because Marcus Camby received some gifts from a shady agent who was trying to represent the young man he knew was going to be making millions from the NBA one day. How can a coach be responsible for something that one of his players does during the summer before his junior season. Secondly, the NCAA cleared Derrick Rose twice to play his freshman year, and then after the season was over, rejected his ACT scores because he took them in the state of Michigan because he was considering going to Michigan before he decided to play for Calipari at Memphis. If the NCAA tells you once that everything is good to go, then you figure it is much less telling you twice. Bobby Knight was a spoiled brat who brought much embarassment to Indianna before they fired the sorry sucker. He thought he was better and beyond the rules because he had a little coaching success there. He was abusive to his players, students, and the media. He should have been kicked out of college basketball twenty years ago for some of his childish antics. There is no place in college basket ball for a jerk like Bobby knight. He still hates Kentucky for beating his undefeated team in the Mid-East regional final in 1992, and has always been jealous of Kentucky basketball. He just needs to fade away and never be heard form again. So that is the facts my friend.
Great article!
