Yankee Stadium: Goodbye to a Dump

Goodbye to Yankee Stadium.

Born in 1923, Yankee Stadium, as the name implies has been the home of the New York Yankees, and now in 2008, it is closing.  You will not see a tear in my eye reminiscing the stadium.  To me it is just the closing of a dump.  There was never a redeeming factor about Yankee Stadium.  Maybe in it’s day, The House that Ruth built was something to behold, but towards the end, the House that Steinbrenner destroyed, was only loved by die hard Yankee fans.  Yankee stadium blended into the part of New York where it was built.  Run down, dirty, dilapidated and all around useless.  And what is even more amusing is the Yankee team themselves have started to look the same way.

Built in one of the worst areas of New York, every time I went I didn’t know if I should fear for my safety more outside the stadium or in the right field bleachers.  They should have closed this stadium years ago.  Sure there are lots of memories there.  You can’t deny the talent that played there, as is pointed out by Memorial Park.  But as of late it has just become a field of bitter memories for Yankee fans.  I think a celebration should be thrown when the walls finally come down.  And once the Yankees start making money from their new stadium, maybe they should take some of the profits and start cleaning up the neighborhood around them.
