The Best Run Scorers in Baseball in 2008

Which major league players had the best run averages in 2008? That is, which players scored the most runs per official at bat in the 2008 season? Great run scorers will average .200 runs scored per at bat.

During the 2008 season seven major league players with at least 350 official at bats averaged .200 or better. I will list the players in descending order so the top player is listed last and give you clues along the way to help you guess who was the top run scorer for 2008. My first clue is that even though this is one of the highest paid players in the game and someone who has averaged .192 runs scored per official at bat in his career you will not guess him right away.

7) Carlos Quentin (Chicago White Sox) – scored 96 runs in 480 at bats for a run average of .200 before breaking his wrist.

Clue #2 – the top run scorer played on a playoff team last year.

6) Curtis Granderson (Detriot Tigers) – scored 112 runs in 553 at bats for a run average of .203.

Clue #3 – plays in the American League.

4 tie) Alex Rodriguez (New York Yankees) – scored 104 runs in 510 at bats for a run average of .204.

Clue #4 – was a teammate of Manny Ramirez in 2008.

4 tie) Mark DeRosa (Chicago Cubs) – scored 103 runs in 505 at bats for a run average of .204.

Clue #5 -  not Al MVP Dustin Pedroia.

3) Lance Berkman (Houston Astros) – 114 runs in 554 at bats for run average of .206.

Clue #6 – not Youkilis.

2) Hanley Ramirez (Florida Marlins) – 125 runs in 589 at bats for run average of .212.

Clue #7 – nope not Big Papi LOL.

1) J.D. Drew (Boston Red Sox) – 79 runs in 368 at bats for a run average of .215.

Did you guess Drew? He missed a lot of at bats in 2008 but was effective when he played. He’s one the highest salaried players in baseball and if he could play full seasons he would be worth the money he’s being paid.

Are run scorers more valuable than RBI men? Yes because a player can drive in 4 runs with one at bat but can only score once each time he bats.
