Last season I drafted Jair Jurrjens of the Atlanta Braves with my second to last pick in my fantasy baseball draft. Jurrjens had a minor league record of 35-22 with a 3.21 ERA and a K rate of 7.2 with excellent control. With those numbers I felt he could pitch well on the major league level and I was rewarded with a solid 13-10 season with a 3.68 ERA and 139 strikeouts. Not bad for starting pitcher taken second to last in my fantasy baseball draft. When you can draft late sleepers who help your fantasy team it gives you a big edge over your competitors.

Here are some National League sleeper pitchers for this year’s fantasy baseball drafts.

Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers) – 12-10 with a 2.49 ERA and a K rate of 11.3 in the minors. And he has good control. Went 5-5 with a 4.26 ERA and a 8.4 K rate last season for the Dodgers. Could have a breakout season this year and really help you.

Wade LeBlanc (San Diego Padres) – 29-18 with a 3.93 ERA and a 8.7 K rate in the minors with good control. Never going to be great in the majors but if he lands a spot in the rotation he’ll be pitching in the best pitchers park in baseball.

William Inman (San Diego Padres) – 33-21 with a 2.83 ERA and a K rate of 10.2 in the minors. This guy can help you if he wins a spot in the rotation this year. If I was running the Padres he would be in my rotation this year for sure.

Jonathan Sanchez (San Francisco Giants) – has a nice K rate of 9.1 in his major league career so whatever role he ends up in he’s a sleeper to help you out. I’m still hoping the Giants give Madison Bumgarner a real chance to make the team as the 5th starter. Sanchez would be a great pitcher if he could ever get his BB totals down and sometimes high K rate guys can do that for a year or two.

Max Scherzer (Arizona Diamondbacks) -  8-5 with a 2.83 ERA and a K rate of 11.9 in the minors with decent control. If he’s healthy he’s got the 5th spot locked up already and with that K rate he can help you this year.

Sean Marshall (Chicago Cubs) – has not yet been that good in the majors but he was great in the minors with a 16-14 record, 2.40 ERA and a 8.8 K rate with excellent control. He’s a lefty and even though Wrigley Field will not help him the Cubs offense should if he lands the 5th starter spot.

Chris Perez (St Louis Cardinals) – 12.1 K rate in the minors and 9.1 so far in the majors point out he can probably close for the Cards this year with some success. His BB rates are high though.

Kenshin Kawakami (Atlanta Braves) – Japanese import was 106-62 with a 3.17 ERA and a great 3.8 K to BB ratio in Japan. He’s no kid at 34 years of age but he might decent in the majors this year.

Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins) – 17-16 with a 2.71 ERA and a 10.4 K rate in the minors. Has not pitched too bad in the majors so far and could have a breakout season this year.

Matt Lindstrom (Florida Marlins) – did have a 12.0 K rate in the minors a couple years back so he could be a decent closer this year for the Marlins.

Jordan Zimmermann (Washington Nationals) – 15-5 with a 2.74 ERA and 9.9 K rate in the minors points him out if he can land a spot in the rotation this year. If he does the addition of free agent Adam Dunn should help out the offense this year too.

Jonathon Niese (New York Mets) – 34-26 with a 3.72 ERA and a K rate of 8.3 in the minors with decent control. He’s not a top prospect or anything but if he lands the 5th spot in the rotation he’ll be OK this year and can help you. The Mets new stadium, still called Citi Field which is a joke since every taxpayer in America is now contributing to the naming rights at this point, looks like it will greatly favor pitchers.
