Last season I drafted Jair Jurrjens of the Atlanta Braves with my second to last pick in my fantasy baseball draft. Jurrjens had a minor league record of 35-22 with a 3.21 ERA and a K rate of 7.2 with excellent control. With those numbers I felt he could pitch well on the major league level and I was rewarded with a solid 13-10 season with a 3.68 ERA and 139 strikeouts. Not bad for starting pitcher taken second to last in my fantasy baseball draft. When you can draft late sleepers who help your fantasy team it gives you a big edge over your competitors.
Here are some American League sleeper pitchers for this year’s fantasy baseball drafts.

Clay Buchholz (Boston Red Sox) – not sure what happened to him last year but he can help you if he gets a spot in the rotation this year. His minor league record is stellar at 24-12 with a 2.43 ERA and a K rate of 10.9 and he’s already thrown a no-hitter in the majors.
Ryan Rowland-Smith (Seattle Mariners) – 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA so far in the majors. He had a 26-23 record with a 3.56 ERA in the minors with a K rate of 8.8. He’ll never be great but but he might be able to help you if he lands a spot in the rotation.
Brandon Morrow (Seattle Mariners) – had a 9.9 K rate in the minors and the same so far in the majors in 128 innings pitched. Can help you either as a starter or as a closer but he also has a very high BB rate of 5.9 so be warned and anybody making any comparisons between Morrow and Joba Chamberlain is crazy. Joba has a much higher K rate of 11.0 and much lower BB rate of 3.3 in 124 major league innings.
David Price (Tampa Bay Rays) – 12-1 with a 2.31 ERA and a 9.0 K rate in the minors. Only listed here as a sleeper because the Rays are saying he’s in competition for the 5th spot which might make him drop in drafts.
Michael Bowden (Boston Red Sox) – 29-19 with a 3.15 ERA and a K rate of 8.6 in the minors. Real longshot at this point to be the 5th starter for the Sox but if he gets the job he could help you out. Still a kid at 22.
Koji Uehara (Baltimore Orioles) – Japanese import had a 102-55 record with a 2.91 ERA and a great K to BB ratio of 7.4 in Japan. Not a kid at 34 but looks like this guy can pitch. He can close or start but looks like the O’s will have him in the rotation this year.

Sean Gallagher (Oakland A’s) – 38-17 with a 2.77 ERA and 9.0 K rate in the minors points him out. He has not yet been that good in the majors but he’s going to get the chance to show his stuff this year.
Joey Devine (Oakland A’s) – 13.2 K rate in the minors and 9.5 K rate so far in the majors points him out as a closer sleeper this year for the A’s. The Braves are going to regret giving up on him.
David Huff (Cleveland Indians) – 15-8 with a 2.70 ERA and a 8.s K rate in the minors with excellent control. Could help you out if he wins the 5th spot in the Indians rotation this year.
