New York Yankees: 2009 World Series Champions?

With the 2009 MLB playoffs starting, I pondered from literary sports articles of the past just how the Yankees are the potential 2009 World Series Champions based on their last consecutive three championships making them a franchise dynasty.

The Philadelphia Phillies are on the quest to defend their 2008 World Series Championship crown. They have a great chance of going to the 2009 World Series. But they face a potential formidable foe in one franchise American League team that possess an impressive resume.

Why do I say the Yankees? Well, they are the champions of their American League East division with a very strong regular season record. And second, the Yankees won the World Series trophy three CONSECUTIVE times in the past: a monumental almost mythical feat in Major League Baseball (MLB) history! The Yankees were World Series champions in these three particular years:

1998 World Series: Defeated San Diego Padres 4-0 (WIN)

1999 World Series: Defeated Atlanta Braves 4-0 (WIN)

2000 World Series: Defeated New York Mets 4-0 (WIN)

Did you notice a pattern in these wins? SWEEP! Yes, the Yankees did a sweep three consecutive times in the World Series in a best of 7 games series. Simply incredible! George Steinbrenner the team General Owner and Joe Torre the team Manager were a special partner to make this happen!

Also, the New York Yankees made it to the World Series 6 times in the last 8 years between 1996 and 2003! Incredible! Their winning record in the World Series was 4-2 (4 wins, 2 losses). Their overall dynasty record between 1996 and 2003 was 4-4 (4 World Series championships, 4 losses). Extremely impressive in Major League Baseball! Who did they lose to, and who did they win against in 1996?

1996 World Series: Defeated Atlanta Braves 4-2 (WIN)

1997 American League Division Series( ALDS): lost to the Cleveland Indians 3-2 (LOSS)

2002 ALDS: lost to the Anaheim Angels 3-1 (LOSS)

2001 World Series: lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 (LOSS)

2003 World Series: lost to the Florida Marlins 4-2 (LOSS)

It would have been phenomenal if the Yankees could have WON in the 2001 and 2003, and 1997 World Series. The Yankees made it to the 1997 ALDS. But they lost to the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 ALDS 3-2 in best of 5 games series. So, theoretically, the Yankees would have been 8 times consecutive World Series champions from 1996 to 2003!

It would have been similar to the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Phil Jackson in the 1990s if Jordan did not retire the first time. I feel Jordan could have won the 1994 and 1995 NBA Finals in his prime, which, if it DID happen, the Chicago Bulls would have been 8 time defending NBA Champions from 1991 to 1998!

The Yankees have a strong chance of making it to the 2009 World Series to face the Philadelphia Phillies.

And the Yankees may sweep again. It is Joe Girardi’s chance to prove it as the team’s Manager: pressure pressure pressure on Girardi with Goerge Steinbrenner watching and expecting!

Despite this analysis, GO PHILLIES! DEFEAT THE YANKEES in the 2009 World Series!
