Most Popular or Best Performance?

Most popular or best performance?

So I was thinking about something the other day with the MLB All-Star Game fast approaching.  I don’t like how they implemented that “one representative from all 30 clubs” rule for the game.  That’s stupid.  It should the top performers in each league. Who cares if there are maybe only 16 of the 30 clubs represented.  It’s not little league where “everybody’s a winner”.  No, sorry, everybody’s not a winner.  Somebody has to lose.  That’s just the reality of it.  Whether you’re 5 or 35.
I mean I looked at my National League ballot after I had voted a few times, mind you, and boy was I stunned that I didn’t vote for a single Phillie.  Not even Carlos Ruiz who is hitting like a man out of his mind.  That may have been an oversight on my part, but I didn’t go back and fix it just so my ballot would be “right” or “perfect”.  I picked the guys I picked because they are also hitting very well.  Not because they’re my favorites.  True some of the guys I voted for are some of my favorite players.  But that wasn’t why I voted for them.  And, if you ask my parents or my sister, they’ll tell you I asked my dad to pick between two guys twice.  Because I couldn’t decide who I should vote for.
Anyway back to the whole “one representative” thing…it’s stupid.  It creates these grossly over sized rosters that don’t need to happen.  I understand guys get injured and maybe they can’t participate so someone else gets the spot.  That’s all well and good.  But to just have somebody from each team to be fair…that’s ridiculous.  They’re grown men.  If they can’t handle not being an All-Star, they have major issues.
All-Star Game voting should be done strictly on numbers.  I think it’d be so cool if MLB just put the stats of the players in bubbles, took out their names and assigned them numbers.  And the only people who could know which player was which number would be people monitoring the voting.  So people couldn’t see, without having to do the extra work most won’t, which stats belong to who.  Then it really would be about whose performing better and not whose popular and whose not.  Or who plays for the Yankees and who doesn’t.  Just like it used to be, way before the internet had even been dreamed of by its creators.
I know, it’s a crazy world and we’re just living in it.  But I’m dreaming of a day when fan voting isn’t so popular player driven.
